I. FILIPINO TRAITS

The Philippines is a meeting point for cultures from all over Asia and the Pacific because it has been a
crossroads between east and west and the merging of cultures reflects the country’s culture and its
people.

✓ It comes from various ethno-linguistic groups that are native to the islands of migrants from
various Asia-Pacific regions, Filipinos are the people who are naturally born to or
recognized with the Philippine country.

CHINA, THE UNITED STATES, AND SPAIN MAINLY INFLUENCE THE MODERN FILIPINO
IDENTITY.

✓ Though Filipinos are racially similar to Malays but in terms of culture they are more like the
Spaniards. Thus, it could be claimed that Filipinos are the most hot-blooded and brave
citizens in the tropical Asian cultures.

Like other countries, the Philippines has its opposing values and labels, it is believed by the Filipinos
that the country have the best values in the world.

✓ Though it has experienced colonization by several countries, but the core values it has gained
from the Filipino ancestors remained intact and are still honored today like the bayanihan or spirit
of kinship and camaraderie implanted by the Chinese ascendants.

FILIPINO VALUES ORIENTATION

I. BASIC CONCEPTS OF VALUES

These are a person's or organization's fundamental beliefs.

and wrong.
✓ It also assists organizations by establishing an unwavering guide to determine if they are on the correct
track and fulfil their objectives. Values are essential because they assist us to grow.

II. MODELS OF FILIPINO VALUES

1. EXOGENOUS MODEL OR FOREIGN MODEL

A "legal and formal" model is defined as the international model. Filipinos from western culture, particularly
from the Spaniards and Americans, inherited the foreign model.

2. INDIGENOUS MODEL OR TRADITIONAL MODEL

Describe as a "traditional and non-formal" model or guide, the indigenous model is deeply integrated in the
Filipinos' subconscious.

III. VALUES ORIENTATION

It is the approach that may influence work or social relationships by persons relating to objects, events or
ideas.

interpersonal interactions and believe that personal bonds are essential for mutual support and

2. Familialism
• Familialism highlights the significance of family ties in Filipino culture. Family is considered the
primary source of support, guidance, and identity. Strong family bonds influence many aspects of
life, including decision-making, social obligations, and community involvement.
3. Particularism
• Filipinos often prioritize personal relationships and specific situations over general rules. This
means they focus more on the needs and interests of people they know personally, rather than
following universal standards. Particularism promotes flexibility and adaptability in social
interactions.

FOUR MAIN OBLIGATIONS UNDERLYING FILIPINO VALUE SYSTEM

The Filipino value system is built on important cultural traditions that focus on community, harmony, and respect.

• Four key obligations guide Filipinos in their daily lives: Pakikiramay, Pakikisama, Bayanihan, and
Galang. These obligations highlight the interconnectedness and mutual support that are central
to Filipino society.

1. Pakikiramay - This refers to empathizing and sympathizing with others, especially during times of grief
or difficulty. It involves offering emotional support and showing compassion.
2. Pakikisama (SMOOTH INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS) - This value emphasizes social
harmony and camaraderie. It involves getting along well with others, maintaining smooth interpersonal
relationships, and making efforts to fit in and avoid conflict.
3. Bayanihan - Representing the spirit of communal unity and cooperation, bayanihan involves people
coming together to help each other, particularly during challenges or community projects. It exemplifies
mutual support and collective action.
4. Galang - This term signifies respect. It includes showing deference to elders and authority figures, as
well as respecting others' properties, emotions, and ideas. Galang is a cornerstone of Filipino social
interactions, reflecting a culture of politeness and consideration.
