20 Prepositions

At the end of this chapter, students will be able to:

Look at the pictures. Fill in the blanks by choosing the correct option.

Read the following sentences:
1. My book is on the table.
2. The players are in the hall.
3. The pencil box is kept inside the cupboard.
4. We were sitting around the fire.
In the above sentences, the highlighted words are prepositions. They show the relationship
between two nouns or pronouns. For example, the word on shows the relationship between
the book and the table.

A preposition is a word used before a noun or a pronoun (thing/person)


to show its relation with other words in a sentence.

Some of the commonly used prepositions are—in, on, at, under, above, behind, beside,
between, across, near, to, into, except, until, till, over, by, from, etc.
A. Underline the prepositions in the following sentences.
1. There is a fish in the bowl.
2. Radha lives in Delhi.
3. The dog jumped over the hurdle.
4. I sat near the door.
5. The rat is coming out of the hole.
6. The aeroplane is flying above the house.
7. The lamp is on the table.
8. The painting is behind the sofa.
9. The table is in front of the sofa.
10. Two girls sat beside each other on the bus.
Different Kinds of Prepositions
Let us have a look at three different types of prepositions.

Prepositions of Position
Read the following sentences:
1. The boy is sitting under the tree.
2. My father sat beside me.
3. There is a hanging bridge over the river.
4. They built a wall between the two buildings.
5. The plane was flying above the clouds.
In the above sentences, the highlighted prepositions indicate where something or someone
is located in relation to something else. They are prepositions of position.

A preposition that indicates where something is located in relation to


something else is called a preposition of position.

Prepositions of Place
Now, read the following sentences:
1. His house is located at the corner of the road.
2. Our dog is playing in the garden.
3. A beautiful butterfly is sitting on the flower.
In the above sentences, the highlighted prepositions tell us about the place where a person
or a thing is located. They are prepositions of place.

A preposition that refers to the specific place where someone or something


is located is called a preposition of place.

Prepositions of Time
Read the following sentences:
1. My appointment with the doctor is at 6 p.m.
2. I met him on 7 January 2018.
3. My match is in the evening.
4. We will have our food during the break.
5. My father will be home by 7 p.m.
6. My mother wants me to complete my homework before 8 p.m.
In the above sentences, the highlighted prepositions tell us about a specific time period
or the actual time when something takes place. They are prepositions of time.

Write those rules using the prepositions you have learnt in this chapter. Use prepositions
of position, place and time.
Remember the time allocated to complete this activity will be only 15 minutes.
Once you have written the rules, show them to your teacher. The teacher may select one
of your rules to implement for the class.
