Q20. Case Base Questions

The concept of electron transfer is found unable to explain the redox
changes or electron shift in case of covalent compounds. To explain these
changes a new concept, called oxidation number is introduced. Oxidation
number is defined as the charge that an atom of the element has in its ion or
appear to have when present in the combined state with other atoms. The
oxidation number of an atom in its free or elementary state or in any of its
allotropes is zero. e.g. the oxidation of H in H 2, S in S8, P in P4, O in O2 or O3,
C in diamond is zero. (4)
(i) In which of the following compounds, nitrogen exhibits highest
oxidation state ?
(a) N2H4 (b) NH3
(c) N3H (d) NH2OH
(ii) What is the oxidation number of Cr in Na 2Cr2O7 ?
(a) 2 (b) 6

(c) 10 (d) 16
(iii) The oxidation
 number of Mn and S in KMnO and Na S O respectively
4 2 2 3

are :
(a) +7 and +2 (b) +7 and – 2
(c) +7 and +5 (d) +5 and +7
(iv) Among which of the following compounds, the oxidation state of
nitrogen is positive ?

(a) NH3 (b) HNO3
(c) Mg3N2 (d) NaN3

- +
(i) Give reason : BH and NH
4 4 are isostructural.
(ii) Give reason : Axial bonds of PCl5 are longer than equatorial bonds.
(iii) Give reason : The ionic size of Cl - is greater than that of K+ though the
two ions are isoelectronic.
(iv) Complete :

(v) Complete :
(vi) Explain : Benzylic free radical is stable.
(vii) Explain : O2NCH2CH2O-- is more stable than CH3CH2O--.
