Class Warm Ups
Class Warm Ups
(Hot seat) Put the class into two groups and have them write a list of vocabulary (preferably objects). Put a chair in front of
the board looking at the class. A person from each group (one at a time) sits on that chair while a St from the opposite
group writes a word on the board from the list of vocabulary on the board. The person sitting in the chair has to say what
his/her team is describing without saying the word on the board. If the person says it he/she gets a point. The group with
the most points wins.
(Desert Island) Draw and island on the board and explain that the class was on an airplane to a faraway place. During the
flight the pilot was drinking alcohol and died. A few minutes later the plane crashed on the island that you drew. After you
see the body parts floating by there were some survival thing that could be used to survive until the rescue came for them.
Write some of those things that they could use to survive. They can also write their own if they want.
(Taboo) Ss are broken up into two teams. Two chairs are placed in the middle of the classroom one looking at the other.
The teacher gives one of the players a card with four to five words on the card. The player with the card must make the
second player say the top word without saying the other four. The team with the most words said wins.
(Word tower) The class is broken up into two teams. The teacher draws a vertical line in the middle of the board, one for
each team to use. The teacher explains the game by writing a word on the board. Each team must have a tower of words
on each side of the line by each player taking turns writing a words starting with the last letter of the word before it. The
team with the most correctly written words wins.
(Mimic) the teacher writes a sentence on a piece of paper, then the teacher mimics the sentence to get the students to say
what he/she is trying to explain by doing gestures. Explain the concept to the class and have them do the same in groups.
(The same) teacher writes on word on the board that he/she knows is the same in English and Spanish. Then the Tr asks the
class “how do you say this word in Spanish?” The teacher continues trying to get words that are the same in English and
Spanish without giving away the activity. Once the class understands the concept, the teacher puts the class into two
groups. There is one captain in each group. The captain decides what to write on the paper. The group with the most words
wins.
(Stop) This is a popular Colombian game used to remember vocabulary taught in past classes. This is a single player game
where each St writes horizontal list of words depending on what the Tr want them to focus on. Under each word Ss must
write another word that starts with the letter that the Tr writes on the board. Depending on the title of each Colum, Ss must
write a word underneath. Depending on what each St writes, the points are divide into 100 for unique and 50 for copies.
The St with the most points wins.
(Brainstorm) Give a topic and ask Ss to think of anything related to today’s lesson. Write the responses for all to see, or ask
a volunteer to do the writing. You can use this to elicit vocabulary related to your lessons.
(Tong twisters) The Tr starts pronouncing the tong twisters with some difficulty. Then the Tr lets the class try one by one.
Once they have tried enough times making a competition. The fastest player or team wins.
(I do) this is a good way to teach verbs. Write some common verbs on the board and review with the Ss. Then have them
give you some verbs they know. Now separate the verbs so they can do in the class. Explain that these verbs are
commands. First start with one verb then slowly do the other ones. Now blindfold the Ss that will do the other actions and
have the Ss guide him/her to complete some tasks you put in the classroom.
(Words in a word) Write the biggest word you can find and write it on the board, then look closely at the word and pick out
other words from that one word. Now give Ss a copy of big words and have them write other words on their notebook. Put
them into teams and make it competitive, the most words wins.
(Picture match) Put the class into teams of two. Show them pictures and the verbs. Explain to them that they must match
each picture with the verbs before the other team. The first team to finish wins.
(Guess who) Show them the pictures of famous people. Depending on what grammar tense you are trying to teach, use the
picture to get Ss to describe each person in groups by using Adjectives of description of another activity is getting Ss to use
verbs. This is a great activity to practice Third person singular.
(Duels) This is a fun and excellent activity to practice vocabulary. The students are divided into two teams. The teams are
positioned at the end of the classroom and the teacher gives the teams a clue to a word or words that each of them have to
write on the board. So they race to the board and the first person to write the word wins the point. The team with the most
points wins.
