Functional relationships

Fig.15 Relationships with the maternity department.

General space requirements

Each space should be able to accommodate the following:
A. all-round access to the incubator;
B. space to enable staff to man oeuvre the incubator, themselves and equipment safely;
C. clinical equipment permanently located around the incubator;
D. any mobile equipment that may be required;
E. a minimum of five members of staff (to attend the baby in an emergency situation);
F. space for the mother to express discreetly at the cot-side; G. at least two chairs to
accommodate visitors

Activity envelope and critical dimensions

The recommended core clinical space envelope within NICU is 13.5 m2.
The critical dimensions are 4.13 m × 3.27 m, plus 600 mm access space (4.13 m × 3.87 m = 16
m2). The recommended allowance of 20 m2 per space given in the schedule of
accommodation includes the core space, access space and an allowance for the following
core support space:

A. pharmacy preparation, including controlled drugs;

B. refrigerated storage of milk and feeds; and
C. Clinical hand-washing/scrub sinks and local disposal.

ISOLATION ROOM
Neonatal – Isolation Room
Isolation rooms are used to isolate patients with known infectious conditions or to protect
patients from infection. They may use positive pressure or negative pressure, but not both.
The isolation room requires facilities to bath new-born.
Isolation room range area – 14 m²-27m2
Minimum wall length of cubicle – 3.2 m
Lockers for supply
Over hade storage=3.6m

Considerations
• All surfaces must be impervious and designed for easy cleaning.
• Where the isolation room is pressurized, an anteroom or air-locked area will be required for
pressure stabilization.
• There should be glazed, clear panels to allow for observation into the room.
• One neonatal isolation room is required for every 36 postnatal beds:

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Unit

This unit allows for mothers and children to room-in together, and includes the following:
• A minimum of two beds
• In suite ablutions
• A day room/lounge
This is located adjacent to the postnatal ward and is described in the IUSS Maternity Care
Facilities document.
Store room
Requirement for storage must be established and quantified for each of the service.
