Unit Aims
The aim of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how an organisation
uses information to design, implement, maintain and manage secure information
systems to support its operations. This unit examines how systems can be used
to support core business functions and enable organisations to be more
productive and competitive within the global marketplace.

Scenario

DATASAP is a full cycle software consulting & development company that helps
global organisations overcome technology challenges of Digital Transformation.
The company’s tech portfolio includes Cognitive Computing, Decentralised
Applications, Internet of Things, and Augmented Reality solutions for industries
ranging from construction to hospitality to insurance.

For over 10 years, DATASAP has been delivering impactful software solutions to
companies and established brands, including:

● Eurostar
● EY
● Universal
● Nestle
● Harley Davidson

The company’s service portfolio includes strategic IT consulting, development


and full lifecycle management of custom software products and applications,
XR and CX design, and system integration.
DATASAP operates in multiple offices and engineering centres in the US, the
UK, the Nordic region, and Eastern Europe.
You work as a senior IT consultant in DATASAP. An UK restaurant chain,
Steakz has approached the company to create an MIS software system for
them. You are heading the development of the system and you have planned
a number of tasks for the team.

Task 1 of 2 Report

Your first task is to understand the existing MIS system of Steakz. You have
planned to write a report which will cover the following:

Your report will consist of two parts.

a. In the first part, determine the inputs, outputs and processing activities of
Steakz followed by an explanation of different information systems and
their functions in an organisation such as Steakz.
b. Conclude the first part with an analysis of the effectiveness of information
systems at the operational, tactical and strategic levels within Steakz.

a. In the second part, explain the importance of Steakz having data and
information that is current, valid and accurate.
b. With examples, describe how an information system can be used for
management reporting in Steakz.
c. In the next section, determine the impact of ethical, technical and
regulatory constraints that Steakz can face when gathering data and
information from various sources within its scope of operation.
d. Conclude the second part with an evaluation of how strategic information
systems can contribute to the competitiveness of organisations such as
Steakz.

Task 2 of 2 Lab demonstration and Lab report

You have successfully compiled and delivered the report. Now you are leading a
team of software developers for the next task.

Instructions

a. Review existing information systems used in Steakz to identify


improvements for competitive advantage.
b. Justify recommended improvements to the existing information system used
in Steakz.
c. Implement improvements to the information system used in Steakz and
evidence the implementation through a use of new web portal for MIS
with three levels of access for the users.
d. Critically review the newly developed web portal for managing
information within Steakz.
