LEADERSHIP STYLES

1. Autocratic leadership
Is a management style whereby one person controls all the decisions and takes little input from
the other group members. Autocratic leaders make decisions based on their own beliefs and do
not include others in their suggestions or advice.
Characteristics
● A decision is made by one person, in this case, the leader
● High-structured and rigid work processes
● Excess emphasis on rules
● Dictation of all the work methods and processes is given by group leaders.

2. Democratic leadership
Democratic leadership also known as participative leadership is a management style in which
members of the group take a more participative role in the decision-making process. In
democratic leadership, everyone is alowed to exchange ideas freely and discussion is
encouraged while there is group equality and a free flow of ideas, the leader of the group is still
present to offer guidance and control.
Characteristics
● Balanced decision making
● Higher productivity
● It encourages creativity

3. Laissez-faire
Laissez-faire leadership is non-authoritative, the leaders give the least possible guidance to
their subordinates.In this leadership leaders believe that people excel when they are left alone
to respond to their responsibilities and obligations in their own ways.
Characteristics
● There is little guidance from the leaders
● Group members are to solve the problems on their own
● Power is given to the employees

4. Bureaucratic leadership
Bureaucratic Leadership is a leadership style that focuses on following strict rules, procedures,
and formal structures within an organization. Leaders who use this style make sure that
everything is done according to set guidelines, with a strong emphasis on order and control.
Characteristics
● The organization has a clear hierarchy, meaning everyone knows who is in charge and
who reports to whom.
● Each person has a specific role and set of responsibilities. There’s no confusion about
what each employee should do, and tasks are clearly outlined.
● This style doesn’t allow much room for creativity or new ideas. Because the focus is on
following rules, it can be hard to try new approaches or innovate.
● Interactions between leaders and employees are usually formal and based on roles
rather than personal connections.

5. Transactional leadership
Also known as managerial leadership, is a leadership style where the executives rely on
rewards and punishments to achieve optimal job performance from the subordinates.
Characteristics
● Resistance to change
● Discourages independent thinking
● It has a short term focus
● The motivation for followers under transactional leadership comes from external rewards
and punishments rather than internal satisfaction or intrinsic motivation

6. Charismatic leadership
Charismatic leadership is a type of influence based on the leaders personal
charisma.Charismatic leaders tend to have a lot of self-confidence, firm confidence in their
beliefs, and a strong need to influence people.
Characteristics
● They hava a strong Communication Skills
● Charismatic leaders have confidence in their abilities and decisions
● Charismatic leaders are often determined and resilient, showing a strong commitment to
overcoming obstacles and achieving their goals.
● They often demonstrate a willingness to make personal sacrifices for the greater good of
the group or organization.

7. Situational leadership
Situational leadership is a flexible and adaptive leadership style that suggests leaders should
adjust their approach based on the specific situation and the needs of their subordinates.
Characteristics

● Depending on the situation, the leader balances between focusing on the task (getting
the job done) and the relationship (supporting and encouraging the subordinates).
● Situational leaders make decisions based on the current circumstances, considering
factors like the task's complexity, the urgency of the situation, and the followers'
development level.
