Case Based SOURCE BASED INTEGRATED QUESTIONS

46. Read the paragraph/passage and answer questions 46(i) to 46(iv)
In our daily life, we listen various types of sounds like voices of our mother, father, brothers
and sisters, chirping of birds, ringing of a school bell, a telephone ringing, a siren, jet plane
roaring in the sky, buzzing of mosquito etc. Sound is a form of energy which requires
material medium for its propagation. Sound is produced by vibrating bodies. The sound
produced by all vibrating bodies is not audible. The audible range is 20 Hz-20,000 Hz. When
sound waves travel in a medium, there is alternate change in pressure or density of the
medium. The speed of sound in solid medium is greater than in liquid and speed of sound in
liquid is greater than in gases.
(i) Two persons cannot hear each other in vacuum ? Explain why ?
(ii) In which medium, speed of sound is maximum ?
(iii) A vibrating body produces sound. However, vibrating simple pendulum does not
produce sound. Why ?
(iv) Define note of a sound.

NANDED Your Hard Work Leads to Strong Foundation [1]

Ans: (i) Sound is a longitudinal wave. It requires material medium for its propagation. In vacuum,
sound waves cannot travel from one person to another person. Hence, they cannot hear each
other.
(ii) Speed of sound is maximum in a solid medium.
(iii) Sound waves having frequencies in the range 20 Hz-20,000 Hz are audible. The waves
produced by a vibrating simple pendulum have frequencies less than 20 Hz. Hence, these
waves are not sound waves.
(iv) Note of a sound is a mixture of several frequencies.
47. Read the paragraph/passage and-answer questions 47(i) to 47(iv)
When transverse wave travels through a medium, the shape of the medium changes. The
highest point on the elevation of the medium is called crest and the lowest point on the
depression of the medium is called trough. A wave produced in a string is shown in figure.

(i) What is the amplitude of the wave shown in figure given in the paragraph ?
(ii) What is the wavelength of the wave shown in figure ?
(iii) What is the frequency of the wave shown in figure ?
(iv) Find the velocity of the wave shown in figure.
Ans : (i) Amplitude = 5 cm
(ii) Wavelength,  = 20 cm
1 1
(iii) Frequency v   = 100 Hz
T 0.01s
(iv) Velocity,  = v  = 100 × 20 = 2000 cm s–1 = 20 m s–1
48. Read the paragraph/passage and answer questions 48(i) to 48(iii).
Echo is the repetition of sound due to the reflection of original sound by a large and hard
obstacle at a certain distance from the source of sound. Echoes are used to determine the
distance of a cliff or a submarine under water from the source of sound.

NANDED Your Hard Work Leads to Strong Foundation [2]

(i) Echo is heard after 5 seconds, a signal is sent towards a submarine at the depth of 3625 m.
Find the speed of sound in water.
(ii) State laws of reflection of sound wave.
(iii) An echo is heard after time 't' on a day, when temperature is 22°C. After how much time,
the echo will be heard if the temperature is increased to 40°C ?
Ans :. (i) Speed = Distance  3625m = 1450 m s–1
time 5
 s
2
(ii) (a) Incident angle = reflection angle.
(b) Incident ray, reflected ray and normal lie in the same plane.
(iii) Time (t) = Distance . The speed of sound increases with the increase in temperature.
Speed of sound

Hence, time to hear echo decreases. It means, echo will be heard after a time less than time 't'
49. Read the paragraph/passage and answer questions 49(i) to 49(iv)
The physical quantities used to describe a wave are amplitude, wavelength and frequency.
The amplitude and wavelength are measured in metre and frequency is measured in hertz
(Hz). Two waves A and B are shown in figure.

(i) Name the physical quantity which determines the loudness of sound wave.
(ii) What is the difference between the amplitudes of waves A and B shown in figure ?
(iii) What is the difference between the wavelengths of waves A and B shown in figure ?
(iv) The frequency of wave A is 100 Hz. What is the velocity of the wave A ?
Ans : (i) Amplitude of the sound wave.
(ii) Difference in amplitudes = 5 cm – 2 cm = 3 cm
(iii) Difference in wavelengths = 10 cm – 5 cm = 5 cm
(iv) Here, v = 100 Hz,  = 10 cm
 = v  , = 100 × 10 = 1000 cm s–1 = 10 m s–1

50. Read the paragraph/passage and answer questions 50(i) to 50(iv).
Sound propagates as variation of density or pressure of a medium. Sound wave is a
longitudinal wave. When sound travels through a material medium, compressions and
rarefactions follow one another. Compression is a region of high density and rarefaction is a
region of low density. The distance between two consecutive compressions or two
consecutive rarefactions is called wavelength.

(i) Out of waves A and B, whose loudness is more than the other ?
(ii) Out of two waves A and B shown in figures, whose pitch is higher than the other ?
(iii) State the factors on which speed of sound depends.
(iv) Write S.I. units of (a) wavelength, (b) frequency.
Ans : (i) Loudness of sound wave is directly proportional to the amplitude of the wave. Since,
amplitude of wave A is greater than that of the wave B, therefore, loudness of wave A is
greater than that of wave B.
(ii) Pitch of a wave is directly proportional to its frequency. Since frequency of wave B is
greater than the frequency of wave A, therefore, pitch of wave B is higher than that of wave
A.
(iii) (a) Nature of medium (b) temperature of medium
(iv) (a) metre (b) hertz (Hz)
51. Explain how sound is produced by your school bell. OR
Sound is produced when your school bell is struck with a hammer. Why ?
Ans. When school bell is struck by a hammer, it starts vibrating. Since the vibrating bodies
produce sound, so the vibrating school bell produces the sound if frequency of vibration is
more than 20 Hz and less than 20,000 Hz.
52. Why are sound waves called mechanical waves ?
Ans Sound waves are characterised by the motion of particles of a medium. Hence, sound waves
are called mechanical waves.

53. Suppose you and your friend are on the moon. Will you be able to hear any sound produced
by your friend ?
Ans. Sound waves need material medium like air to move from one place to another place. Since
there is no atmosphere on the moon, so sound cannot travel from one place to another place.
Hence, we cannot hear sound on the moon.
54. Which wave property determines (a) loudness, (b) pitch ?
Ans (a) Amplitude of the wave determines loudness.
(b) Frequency of the wave determines pitch.
55. Guess which sound has a higher pitch : guitar or car horn ?
Ans. Guitar, because frequency of sound produced by guitar is higher than the sound produced by
car horn.
