AUTOPILOT TEST
Autopilot disconnect tone .......................................................................NOTE

NOTE
IF the G1000 avionics system and the autopilot GFC 700
are installed, the AFCS system automatically conducts a
preflight self-test upon initial power application. The
preflight test is indicated by a white boxed PFT on the PFD.
Upon successful completion of the preflight test, the PFT is
removed, the red AFCS annunciation is removed, and the
autopilot disconnect tone sounds. If AFCS annunciation
remains on or a failure of the preflight test is indicated
terminate flight preparation and investigate the problem.

MANUAL ELECTRIC TRIM – TEST as follows (if G1000 and autopilot

GFC 700 are installed):
Press the AP DISC button down and hold while commanding trim.
Manual electric trim should not operate either nose up or nose down.

ECU & VOTER TEST

CAUTION
If the ECU A/B FAIL (if G1000 is installed) or ECU A/B (if White Wire
annunciator panel is installed) indicators do not illuminate during the
test sequence, there is a malfunction in the engine control system.
Terminate flight preparation.
The whole test procedure must be completed without any error (ECU
A/B FAIL (if G1000 is installed) or ECU A/B (if White Wire annunciator
panel is installed) extinguished after test completion). In case the test
procedure aborts with an error indication (one or both ECU A/B FAIL (if
G1000 is installed) or ECU A/B (if White Wire annunciator panel is
installed) indicators remain ON) terminate flight preparation, even if the
engine seems to run smoothly after the test procedure.

CAUTION
During the test sequence the engine will produce thrust therefore the
parking brake must be set.

NOTE

The engine oil/gearbox temperature have to be in the green

range before starting the test sequence. Efficient engine warm up
may require higher power settings (max. 50% engine power).

Releasing the ECU TEST BUTTON or manipulating the power

lever before the test sequence is completed will abort the test
sequence.

During the following ECU and fuel pump test, a shake of the
engine might occur.

NOTE
The ECU test consists of the following sequence: the
propeller RPM will increase to above 1900 RPM. This is
followed by a slight RPM drop, then a recovery before
returning to idle RPM. At this point the ECU switches back
to the other ECU channel and the sequence is repeated. At
the end of the test, the control of the engine is returned to
the initially active ECU channel. A slight shake of the
engine may occur during ECU switching.

instructions to keep hands and feet well clear of the controls.
- Environmental; cabin cooling and heating, no smoking and
ensure electronic devices are switched off.
- Entry and exit, door locks.
- Emergency equipment, location and correct use.

SOME NORMAL OPERATIONS AFM WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND

NOTES

WARNINGS

ENGINE START
If the oil pressure has not moved from the red range within 3 seconds
after starting, set ENGINE MASTER switch to OFF and investigate
problem.

TAKE OFF
The proper performance of the engine at MAX should be checked early
in the take-off procedure, so that the take-off can be aborted if
necessary.

CAUTIONS

AFTER TAKE OFF & CLIMB

If the oil temperature and/or coolant temperature reaches the yellow
range during climb, flight should be continued with the airspeed
increased by 5 kts and power reduced by 10% (reduced climb rate) for
better engine cooling.
Flight Operations Revision: 00
Revision Date:
DA40NG Expanded Checklist 01/10/2024

APPROACH AND LANDING

For landing the adjustable backrests (if installed) must be fixed in the
upright position.
In conditions such as (e.g.) strong wind, danger of wind shear or
turbulence a higher approach speed should be selected.

SHUT DOWN
After turning the ENGINE MASTER OFF, wait until the engine
indications on the G1000 MFD (if installed) or MED (if installed)
disappear prior to switching the ELECT. MASTER OFF. This ensures
that engine and flight data can be written to non-volatile memory before
removing electrical power.

Do not shut down an engine by placing the FUEL VALVE in the OFF
position. The high-pressure fuel pump can otherwise be damaged.

NOTES

TAKE OFF

CRUISE
The engine manufacturer recommends a cruise power setting of 75%.

Altimeter Setting Procedures

Principle:
The barometric setting is set on the altimeter and cross checked within
±60 ft of the reference altitude.

The pilot of an aircraft operating in Class G airspace must maintain

vertical position by reference to the Zone Area QNH setting except that
the appropriate aerodrome QNH setting must be used for:
(a) take-off, landing, and flight within the aerodrome traffic circuit;
and
(b) the intermediate and final approach segments of an instrument
approach.

The pilot of an aircraft departing from an aerodrome where no QNH

setting is available must set aerodrome elevation on the altimeter prior
to departure and obtain appropriate altimeter setting from an ATS unit
as soon as possible, and in any case, before entering IMC.

Portugal Altimeter Setting Procedures

Altimeter setting procedures for Portugal (Lisbon FIR) are contained in
Part I – Rules and Procedures of the VFR Manual, published by NAV
Portugal.

VHF Communication

Principle:
The Garmin 1000 can display a multitude of information. When preparing
for various phases of flight it is important to standardise the information
displayed, maintaining consistency, when setting up communication
frequencies, FMS, and navigation aids.
The following is a normal standardised set up. However, there will be
situations where variations to this standard are appropriate.

VHF COMMs
COM1 is used primarily for two-way communications. The primary
frequency in use is selected in the active box, with the subsequent
frequency in standby.

COM2 is used primarily to listen to ATIS/AWIB and information/courtesy

calls to secondary stations, enabling communication on the primary
frequency to be maintained on COM 1.

The functionality of the radios must be tested before flight by transmitting

and receiving on both COM1 and COM2. This is normally achieved by
transmitting and receiving on COM1 with ATC and on COM2 with
Operations.

Enroute Frequency
In uncontrolled airspace when not in the vicinity (within 10nm & 3000
feet) of an aerodrome the pilot should maintain a listening watch on the
relevant FISCOM (Flight Information Service Communications)
frequency.

Navigation Aids

NAVAIDs
Set up of the navigation aids follows the Select Identify Display
mnemonic,
NAVAIDs: NAV1 ACTIVE frequency is set to the primary
navigation or approach aid. The STANDBY is set
to the next appropriate aid to be used.
Identification is verified visually or audibly if
visual ID is not displayed.
NAV2 ACTIVE frequency is set to the primary
navigation or approach aid. The STANDBY is set
to the next appropriate aid to be used.
Identification is verified visually or audibly if
visual ID is not displayed.
DME slaved to NAV2. During ILS/LLZ approach
where ILS/LLZ DME is to be referenced the DME
is to be slaved to NAV1 for the approach. The
DME is to be audibly identified.

Note: Where DME is not equipped, GPS derived

distance maybe used in lieu, a RAIM prediction
is normally required prior to departure.

Bearing Pointers: BRG2 - Primary bearing reference (VOR1/2-

GPS),
BRG1 – Supplementary navigation information
when required.

FMS Flight Plan: SET as required during FMS set up procedures.

DME/BRG/HSI: The information displayed about the HSI and the

setup of the HSI under typical procedures will be:

DME DISPLAYED.
BRG 1 OFF.
BRG 2 ON VOR2 for operations or GPS for GNSS operations.
The above settings are accessed via the PFD soft key and sub menu.
CDI VOR1 OR GPS for GNSS operations.
The above settings are accessed via the CDI soft key.
