Question No. 17 to 20 consist of two statements-Assertion-(A) and
Reason(R). Answer these questions selecting the appropriate option
given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
17 Assertion: Carbon shows maximum catenation property in the 1
periodic table.
Reason: Carbon has small size and thus, forms strong
C-C bond.
18 Assertion: Blue colour of sky appears due to scattering 1
of blue colour.
Reason: Blue colour has longest wave length in visible
spectrum.
19 Assertion: The magnetic field is stronger at a point which is nearer to 1
the conductor and goes on decreasing on moving away from the
conductor.
Reason: The magnetic field B produced by a straight current carrying
wire is inversely proportional to the distance from the wire.
20 Assertion: Reflex actions are automatic and rapid responses to stimuli. 1
Reason: These actions are controlled by brain.

SECTION E
Question No. 37 to 39 are case based questions
37 Refining is the process of purification of metals. In electrolysis, 4
electrical energy is used to bring about a non-spontaneous redox
reaction. This is done by passing an electric current through a liquid
containing ions, known as an electrolyte. In contrast to metals, the
current in electrolytes is carried by the movement of ions rather than
the movement of electrons. The solid conductors inserted into the
liquid are called electrodes, the one with a positive charge is called the
anode (because it attracts anions) and the one with the negative
charge is called the cathode.
(i) Name the electrolyte used in refining of copper. (ii)
What is anode mud? (iii) a. Cu
2+ - 2+ -
--------->Cu + 2e b. Cu + 2e ---------> CuWhich of these two
reactions occur at cathode and anode?
38 Rani and Preeti observed that shoots of a plant growing in shade bend 4
towards the sunlight. Whereas, leaves of ‘Touch me not’ plant fold and
droop soon after touching. They were curious to know how these
movements occur in plants.
(i)Which hormone causes the bending of shoots in the plants? (ii)
Name the type of movement in the leaves of ‘Touch me not’ plant.
(iii) Compare the movement of growth of the pollen tube towards
ovulewith the movement of roots towards water.
OR

39 An Pea plant having violet coloured flower when crossed with the plant 4
