perception of the text and defines further use in academic works.

STEPS FOR WRITING AN ARTICLE REVIEW:

CRITIQUE PAPER
Critique - is a genre of academic writing that briefly summarizes and critically evaluates a work or
concept.

Critiques can be used on:

Creative works – novels, exhibits, film, images

Research – monographs, journal articles, reviews,

Media – news reports, feature articles

Characteristics:

-formal
-academic writing style
-has a clear structure
-introduction, body, and conclusion.
(The body of a critique includes a summary of the work and a detailed evaluation.)
-strengths and weaknesses

Purpose is to gauge the usefulness or impact of a work in a particular field.

How to Write a Critique

-Study the work under discussion.


-Make notes on key parts of the work.
-Develop an understanding of the main argument or purpose being expressed in the work.
-Consider how the work relates to a broader issue or context.

Introduction

-Name the work being reviewed as well as the date it was created and the name of the
author/creator.
-Describe the main argument or purpose of the work.
-Explain the context in which the work was created.
-Have a concluding sentence that signposts what your evaluation of the work will be. Indicate
whether it is a positive, negative, or mixed evaluation.

Critical Evaluation
:
- should give a systematic and detailed assessment of the different elements of the work, evaluating how
well the creator was able to achieve the purpose through these.

- It should deconstruct the work and identify both strengths and weaknesses.

Conclusion
- usually a very brief paragraph, which includes:

- a statement indicating the overall evaluation of the work

- summary of the key reasons, identified during the critical evaluation, why this evaluation
was formed.

- recommendations for improvement on the work may be appropriate.

American Psychological Association (APA) style is used in referencing.

POSITION PAPER
Position Paper - is a type of academic writing that presents one's stand or viewpoint on a particular
issue.

Purpose
-To help you understand your nation's views and interests on various issues.

-To generate support from the readers through strong and valid assertions.

-To generate support on an issue. It describes a position on an issue and the rationale for that
position.
