Physics Assignment -1

1. The displacement equation of a particle describing simple harmonic motion is

x = 0.01 Sin 100π(t+0.005) meter, where x is the displacement of the particle at any
instant t. Calculate the amplitude, periodic time, maximum velocity, and displacement at
the time of the motion.
2. A particle of mass 0.05 kg executes SHM. When the displacement from the center of
motion is 0.04 m, the force acting on the body is 18 10-3 N. If the maximum velocity is
2 m/s, find the amplitude and maximum acceleration.
3. A particle of mass 5 gm executes SHM and has amplitude of 8 cm. If it makes 16
vibrations per second, find its maximum velocity and energy at mean position.
4. The displacement of particle executing SHM is given by x = 20 Sin ( The period
of vibration is 60 seconds. At t =0, the displacement of the particle is 1 cm. Find
(a) The initial phase
(b) The phase angle when the displacement is 3 cm.
(c) The phase difference between any two positions of the particle 10 seconds apart.
5. A body of 4.9 Kg hangs from a spring and oscillates with a period of 0.6 seconds. How
much will the spring shorten when the body is removed?
6. The spring constants (k1 and k2) of both springs are 50 Nm-1, and the block of mass 1 kg
is displaced by 0.01 m to the right from its mean position before being released. In the
equilibrium position of the system, the springs are stretched by 0.02 m each. Calculate
the (a) restoring force at t = 0,
(b) restoring force when the block travels to the other extreme, and
(c) the restoring force in the static equilibrium position.
7. A massless spring of spring constant 20 N/m is suspended from a rigid support and
carries a mass of 0.2 Kg at its lower end. It is observed that the system performs damped
oscillatory motion, and its energy decay to 1/e of the initial value in 50 sec.
(a) What is the mean lifetime
(b) Damping Constant
(c) Quality Factor
(d) Natural Frequency of Oscillation
8. A particle starts at t =0 from the mean position with a velocity v = 3π m/s in the positive
direction. If the time period of oscillation is 2 sec, write the expression for the
displacement of the particle.
(a) What minimum time does the particle take to go from the mean position to point P,
which lies midway between the mean and extreme right positions?
(b) What minimum time does the particle take to reach the extreme right position from
the mean position?
9. A mass M = 2 Kg hangs from a vertical spring. When a mass m = 0.6 kg is gently added,
the spring is further stretched by 4 cm. Now m is removed and M is set into oscillations.
Calculate the period of oscillations.
10. A pendulum with a length 1.0 m is released from an initial angle 15˚. After 1000sec, its
amplitude has been reduced by friction to 5.5˚. If amplitude A = A0 , then what is the
value of γ.
11. A 2.0 Kg object attached to a spring moves without friction and is driven by an external
force given by F = (3.0 N) Sin (2πt). If force constant of spring is 20 N/m, then the
amplitude of motion is?
12. A weight of 40 N is suspended from a spring that has a force constant of 200 N/m. The
system is undamped and is subjected to a harmonic driving force of frequency 10 Hz
resulting in a forced motion amplitude of 2 cm. What is the maximum value of the
driving force?
13. An object of mass 2 Kg hangs from a spring of negligible mass and spring constant of
800 N/m. The spring is extended by 2.5 cm when the object is attached. The top end of
the spring is oscillated up and down in SHM with amplitude of 2mm. The damping
constant is 0.5 sec-1. What is the amplitude of forced oscillation at ω = ω0.
14. The Energy of a piano string of frequency 256 Hz reduces to half its initial values in 2
sec. What is the Q-value of the string?
15. In an RLC circuit L = 5 mH, C = 6 μF, and R = 20 Ω
(a) Is the circuit underdamped, critically damped, or overdamped.
(b) If the circuit starts oscillating with a charge of 3 10-3 C on the capacitor, how much
energy has been dissipated in the resistor by the time oscillations cease?
16. Calculate the Quality factor Q for a RLC circuit having L =27mH, C=30μF, and R=10Ω.
17. A RLC circuit have L =, C =, and R = 40 Ω resistor, 3 mH inductor, 5 μF capacitor. Find
the resonant frequency.
18. In an oscillating LC circuit, (a) calculate the value of charge q, in terms of the maximum
charge Q, present on the capacitor when the energy is shared equally between the electric
and magnetic fields? Assume that L = 12 mH and C = 1.7 μF.
