Introduction

What is science?

What is technology?

What is society?
• Science, Technology, and Society
is an interdisciplinary course that
engages the students to confront
the realities brought about by
science and technology in
society.
• seeks to instill reflective
knowledge in the students so
that they are able to live the
good life and display ethical
decision-making in both social
and scientific dilemmas
• Science – defined as the system of knowledge of the
natural world gained through the scientific method
- originally called as “philosophy of the natural world”

• Technology – from Greek words tekne’ meaning “art or craft”

and –logia, meaning a “subject or interest”
- “practical applications of what we know about
nature”
•Where do we see science and
technology in everyday life?
•What are your observations of the
interaction of these three concepts –
science, technology, and society?
Unit 1
General Concepts in Science, Technology, and
Society
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this chapter, the students should
be able to:
1. explain how science and technology affected the society
and environment and vice versa;
2. identify inventions and discoveries that changed the
world over the course of history; and
3. discuss the scientific and technological developments in
the Philippines.
some general concepts that highlight the
interactions between these domains:
1) Ethics and Responsibility: As technology advances,
ethical considerations become crucial. The choices made
in developing and implementing technology can have far-
reaching societal impacts. Balancing innovation with
responsible use and potential consequences is a key
challenge.
2) Innovation: Innovation drives progress in both science
and technology. It involves developing novel ideas,
processes, or products that address societal needs or
challenges. Innovation can lead to transformative changes
in various sectors, from medicine to communication.
3. Digital Divide: Technology's rapid advancement can lead
to a digital divide, where access to information and
opportunities is unequal. Bridging this divide is essential for
ensuring that the benefits of technology are accessible to all
members of society.
4. Privacy and Security: The digital age has raised
concerns about the privacy and security of personal data.
Balancing the convenience of technology with the need to
protect individuals' privacy is an ongoing challenge.
7. Cultural Impact: Technology and science influence culture and vice
versa. Innovations in entertainment, art, and media often reflect
societal values, while cultural norms can shape the direction of
technological development.

8. Global Collaboration: Science and technology have enabled global

collaboration on a scale never before seen. Researchers, engineers,
and professionals from around the world work together to address
challenges that cross borders, such as climate change and infectious
diseases.
• These concepts highlight the complex and dynamic relationship
between science, technology, and society. Understanding and
navigating these interactions is vital for creating a sustainable,
innovative, and ethically responsible future.
