AECH3232 - III - FA24 2

The document outlines an assignment for AECH 3132 – Chemical Reaction Engineering, focusing on an elementary gas phase reaction in a membrane flow reactor. It includes tasks such as mole balances, plotting molar flow rates, calculating conversion at a specific volume, and discussing changes in conversion with varying parameters. Additionally, it provides instructions for registering on Polymath and includes a model derivation example.

Fall 2024
For a given elementary gas phase reaction below takes places in membrane flow reactor
isothermally at constant pressure.

𝐴 ⇌ 2𝐵 + 𝐶

The membrane is permeable to B but not to A and C. Pure gaseous A enters the reactor at P kPa and
T ℃ at a molar flow rate (FAO) of 10 mol/min.
The rate of diffusion of B out of the reactor per unit volume of reactor, 𝑅𝐵 , is proportional to the
concentration of B (i.e., 𝑅𝐵 = 𝑘𝐶 𝐶𝐵 ).
𝑘𝑃𝑎 × 𝑑𝑚3
𝑅 = 8.314
𝑚𝑜𝑙 × 𝐾

Group 4 300 800 0.5 0.08 0.5
Group 5 280 900 0.7 0.05 0.4

a) Show mole balances, rate laws, stoichiometry, and combination of these to provide
differential mole balances on A, B, and C (this can be handwritten).
b) Plot the molar flow rates of each species as a function of reactor volume.
c) By using the plot, calculate the conversion of A at V = 500 dm3.
d) Find and discuss the change of conversion when there is a 20% increase in the value 𝑘𝐶 .
e) Find and discuss the change of conversion when the value of 𝐾𝐶 is doubled.
f) Assume that instead of membrane flow reactor, you have a PFR. Calculate the conversion
and reactor volume when the system reaches equilibrium.

The assignment should be submitted via hard copy. You need to provide polymath code, and
plots.

Model derivation Polymath code Notes

First you need to enter ODEs.

𝑑𝐶𝐴 d(Ca)/d(t) = -k1*Ca
= −𝑘1 × 𝐶𝐴
𝑑𝑡 d(Cb)/d(t) = k1*Ca - k2*Cb
𝑑𝐶𝐵
= 𝑘1 × 𝐶𝐴 − 𝑘2 × 𝐶𝐵 d(Cc)/d(t) = k2*Cb
𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝐶𝐶
= 𝑘2 × 𝐶𝐵
𝑑𝑡
𝑘1 = 1 k1=1 Then you need to enter other equations
or constants.
𝑘2 = 2 k2=2

𝐶𝐴0 = 1 Ca(0)=1 You need to enter the initial value of

the ODEs, in this example these are
𝐶𝐵0 = 0 Cb(0)=0
concentrations of A,B and C.
𝐶𝐶0 = 0 Cc(0)=0
t(0)=0 Initial and final value of the time
variable (t) in the ODEs.
t(f)=3
In other examples instead of time, it
could be volume of the reactor (V) or
amount of catalysty (W).
