EDUCATION
Biotechnology Advanced Diploma (In Progress) September 2022 -
Present
Centennial College, Toronto, ON Expected graduation:
06/2024
Projects:
- Evaluation of the synergistic antimicrobial effect of the pigments produced from Serratia marcescens
(prodigiosin) and chlorophyll from Neem leaves on common foodborne pathogens.
- Purification and Characterization of Cytochrome C from Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae).
- Detection and identification of Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria innocua using selective/differential
media and biochemical tests.
I am enthusiastic about the field of microbiology, which inspired me to pursue the Microbiology Technician
position at Merieux Nutrisciences. Currently enrolled in the Biotechnology Advanced Diploma program at
Centennial College, I expect to graduate in June 2024. In addition to my ongoing studies, I hold a BSc. in Chemical
Engineering, completing my degree in 2019. My educational background has equipped me with a comprehensive
skill set, particularly in areas such as Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, and quality assurance. My commitment
to excellence, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative mindset make me well-prepared to contribute
effectively as a team player. I am excited about the prospect of applying my knowledge and skills to support the
objectives of Merieux Nutrisciences.
During my internship at VECOL S.A. in Colombia, I served as a research assistant, actively contributing to the team.
My responsibilities included the regular measurement of materials and chemicals, as well as the performance of
immunoassays, specifically ELISA and Western blot techniques, on various samples. I was committed to the
precision and reliability of the results by applying aseptic techniques to ensure the integrity of the experimental
process. Moreover, my education in Biotechnology has provided me with extensive exposure to and proficiency in
tasks such as the preparation and pouring of various growth media, inoculation processes, incubation procedures,
and the accurate interpretation of plate readings. Throughout these experiences, I consistently prioritized safety
protocols, ensuring a secure work environment. The attached resume includes more information about my skills
and experience.
I would welcome the opportunity to attend an interview to discuss my qualifications for this position in person.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Diego Gomez
As a professional, I want to dedicate my career to making a meaningful impact through science. Being able to see
the emergence of groundbreaking technologies and innovations every day, making people’s lives easier,
supporting multiple industries, and trying to aid in social and environmental problems inspires me to contribute
and be part of those developments. For me, a career at the intersection of Chemistry, Microbiology, and
Biotechnology, where I can work with microorganisms which has been my passion since I was younger, provides
an ideal platform to realize my dreams.
To talk about my background. I have a BSc in chemical engineering and currently, I’m in my last semester in the
Biotechnology advanced program at Centennial College. Throughout my educational path, I’ve acquired multiple
skills from basic laboratory procedures such as preparation of growth media, inoculation of cultures, and aseptic
technique. Furthermore, I have honed my expertise in advanced techniques like ELISA and Western blot
immunoassays, and instrumental analysis with equipment like HPLC.
For me, the top 3 skills to be outstanding at every task that I do are critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective
communication. I don’t feel overwhelmed by challenges, I like to look for different solutions for any situation and
feel comfortable working as a team or on my own, I like to think that there is always a way out, and find it
rewarding when I can provide results at a determined situation.
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS
Problem-solving
When I was about to graduate, I was looking for companies in the microbiology industry to do a co-op and
develop a research graduation project. I found a company called VECOL S.A. that is focused on promoting animal
health and providing solutions to the agricultural sector. When I talked to them, they turned me down at first.
Even though they had a project on the shelf that was ready to be implemented, they did not have the trained
personnel to start it, and could not assign any assets to train the personnel.
Therefore, I talked to the research and development director who interviewed me and I offered to create a full
proposal to start the project. With limited access to the details of the project I was committing myself to structure
the project, and if the proposal was suitable to the company’s needs, they would allow me to work on it, using the
experimentation details for my graduation project.
After submitting the details of the project, the report was presented to the R&D department and they approved
the proposal, allowing me to work with limited supervision, supplying a solution to their lack of trained personnel
and time investment on the project from the trained staff that was already assigned to other activities.
Critical Thinking
I wrote the proposal and presented it to the R&D department. After being approved and due to the initial
conditions set for me to work with them, the assigned project director’s time was limited due to his other
responsibilities. This led to multiple challenges when the experimentation deviated from the expected outcomes.
At first, I demonstrated that I could offer solutions to the lack of assets the company had but I also needed to
demonstrate that my abilities were beyond writing proposals and that I was not only able to understand the
arising challenges but also to think about solutions, find tools and evaluate options to meet the deadlines for the
progress reports with the supervisor.
Even though some of the decisions that I made led me to wrong outcomes, the majority of them led my project
director to praise and recognize my judgment. In addition, the project was completed successfully without any
major deviation from the established budget.
Effective Communication
However, the success of the project was not based exclusively on judgment calls and the previous knowledge I
acquired from my degree. There were multiple situations in which I had to utilize instruments or analyze
information in software that was completely unknown to me. In a setup in which the only person in the laboratory
was me stopping the experiment or wasting materials was not an option, but asking my project director was not
either.
To understand the results obtained by the instrumentation software, how to proceed with modifications to the
protocols, or even when I needed equipment or material that was not available in my lab, I contacted coworkers
who were proficient with the software, instruments, or protocols that were challenging. Even when they had no
specific knowledge of my project’s topic, they gave me useful indications and instructions to solve my question
and continue with the experimentation without delay.
