Performing Fundamental Arithmetic Operations on Integers

The document explains the rules for performing addition and subtraction of integers, highlighting that the result of adding two positive integers is positive, while adding two negative integers yields a negative result. It provides examples for both operations, illustrating how to handle integers with different signs. Additionally, it includes a brief mention of a sponsored shopping application.

Performing fundamental arithmetic operations on integers: Rule for

Addition and Subtraction of integers with examples

There are 4 basic arithmetic operations that can be performed with integers are addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. Let’s learn how to add or subtract integers
Addition of integers
When adding two positive integers, the result is positive. When adding two negative integers, the result
is negative. If the two numbers have different sign, subtract the number and keep the sign of the bigger
number.

Solved Examples on adding Integers

Q1: Add –47 and 84.

We have to add a negative integer and a positive integer. So take the difference between the two
numbers and keep the sign of largest integer. So -47 + 84 = 37

Q2: Add –55 and -61.

We have to add the two negative integers. So add the two numbers and keep the negative sign. So,

-55 + (- 61) = -116

Subtraction of Integers
To subtract two integers, add the opposite of the second integer to the first integer.

Example

7– 4=3
7 - (-3) = 7 + 3= 10 (opposite of -3 = 3)

-7 – (+3) = -7 - 3 = = -10

-7 - (-3) = = - 7 + 3 = = -4

Solved Examples on Subtracting Integers

Q1: Subtract –35 from –90.

Solution:

We have to subtract two negative integers. The opposite of second integer is 90. Now add this number
with the first integer by applying addition rules. So -35 + 90 = 55

Q 2: Subtract –15 from 3.

Solution:

Here, we have to subtract two integers with different signs. The opposite of second integer is -3. Now
add this number with the first integer by applying addition rules. -15 + - 3 = -18
