Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997, in Scotts Valley, California by Marc Randolph and
Reed Hastings as an online movie rental service. Initially operating with 30 employees
and 925 DVD titles, Netflix used a pay-per-rent model with rentals costing around $4 plus
a $2 postage charge.
The company later transitioned to a subscriber-based model, which led to significant
growth. In 2000, Netflix introduced a personalized movie recommendation system
based on user ratings, resulting in a subscriber increase to 4.2 million by 2005.
In 2006, they announced a $1 million prize for developing a superior recommendation
algorithm. By 2007, Netflix shifted away from DVD rentals to online video streaming,
partnering with devices like Xbox 360 and Blu-Ray players as part of their new strategy.
