Q. 8. On a 120 km long railway track, a train travels the first 80 km at a

uniform speed of 160 km/h. Calculate the speed with which the train
should move on the rest of the track so as to get the average speed of 80
km/h for the entire trip.

Q. 9. If the displacement of a body is zero, is it necessary that the distance

covered by it is also zero ?

Q.10. Explain the following type of motion with one example for each.
(i) acceleration is positive
(ii) acceleration is negative
(iii) acceleration is zero.

Q. 11. A bridge is 500 m long. A 100 m long train crosses the bridge at a
speed of 30 m/s. Find the time taken by train to cross it.

Q.12. A motor cycle moving with a speed of 5 m/s obtains an

acceleration of 0.2 m/s2. Calculate the speed of the motor cycle after 10
seconds, and the distance travelled by it in this time.

Q.13. The brakes applied to a car produce an acceleration of 6 ms–2 in

the opposite direction to the motion. If the car takes 2s to stop after the
application of brakes, calculate the distance it travels during this time.

Q. 14. Why is the motion of satellites around their planets considered an

accelerated motion ?

Q.15. From a station ‘X’ a train starts from rest and attains a speed of 54
km/h in 10 s. Then by applying brakes negative acceleration of 2.5 ms–2
is produced and it stops at station ‘Y’ in 6 s. Find the distance between
station ‘X’and ‘Y’.

Ans.9. Uniform Velocity : An object with uniform velocity covers equal distances in equal intervals of
time in a specified direction e.g., an object moving with speed of 40 kmh–1 towards west has uniform
velocity.

Non-uniform Velocity : When an object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time in a specified
direction, or if the direction of motion changes, it is said to be moving with a non-uniform or variable
velocity e.g., revolving fan at a constant speed has variable velocity.

Ans.10. (i) Here, the motion is accelerated motion, e.g., car moving on a road
with increasing velocity.
(ii) Here, the motion is retarded motion, e.g., brakes applied to a moving car.
(iii) Here, the motion is uniform motion, e.g., car moving with a constant speed
along a road.

Ans.13.

Ans.14. Satellites revolve around their planets in almost circular orbits with
constant speed. Thus, during their motion, the speed remains constant, while the
direction of motion changes continuously. As a result, there is a change in their
velocity. Therefore, the motion of satellites around their planets is considered as
accelerated motion.
