Doors and Windows

7.1. General
Doors and Windows both consist of a frame and the shutters. The frame may be made of wood or mild
steel, but mostly in old days and even today wooden frames are preferred. Recently wood has become very
scare and thus costly and hence mild steel frames are coming increa.singly in use these days in different designs.
Here in this chapter estimate of only wooden doors and windows have been given. Wooden frames of doors
consists of three pieces i.e. two vertical posts and head piece. No sill is provided. In case of window frames
there has to be at least four pieces namely two vertical posts, one head piece and one sill piece. Similarly door
shutters n1ay be two or one for a door. Door having two shutters is known as double leave door and that having
one shutter only is known as single leave door. Now a days the fashion is to adopt single leave doors. Windows
may be single leaved, two leaved OT even multi-leaved depending upon its size and design. For window frames
head and sill two pieces are a must but vertical piece may be two or more than two again depend upon the
design of window.
Size of door or window means the size of ~e opening. It is also known as modular size. The bottom of
both the vertical posts of the door frame having no sill should be inse11ed in the door floor finish about 30 to
50 mm or be fixed by iron dowel bars.
Therefore height of the door frame = Height of opening + 30 to 50 mm
Width of the .head piece= Width of opening+ 2 x 150 mm
Size of door and shutter without sill is as follows :
Height= Height of opening - Frame thickness - bottom clearance + one rebate
Width= Width of opening -2 x Frame thickness+ two rebate
Area of painting for shutter with frame = size of opening
In this case small portion covered by plaster is neglected due to extra labour required to apply paint at
the boarder of a frame .
. Wind0w grills are fixed at the outer edge in case of inside shutters or at the inner edge in the case of
outs1d:e shutter of the frame.
In any case measurement of a grill shall be as follow
Height =Height of opening - 2 x frame thicknes
Width =Width of opening - 2 x frame thickL1ess
There are variou~ types of door and window fitting in the market. The choice of quality of fitting ~
depen~ent upo~ the builder. C.B.R.I. Roorkee has recon1111ended the level of various fittings depending 0 ~.
the phn~ are~ 111 sq. m. :he mode of 1~eas_urement for those fittings are given in IS 1200 Part vn-~ 97ed
The vanous kinds of fittings shall be descnbed and n1easured separately accordnlg to the material, fintSh
size, pattern and n1ethod of fixing.
