Floral and Faunal Diversity of Kusmunda S.E.C.L.
District Korba, Chhattisgarh
Kusmunda opencast expansion project of SECL Kusmunda Area is situated
in Katghora Forest Division of Korba District of Chhattisgarh. The study on the floral
assessment for the proposed project activity is based on extensive field survey of the
area. Methodology of survey adopted was primary through observations/recording,
secondary method through Working Plan of Forest Division, Range Office and public
participation. Besides the collection of plant species, information was also collected
with vernacular names of plant species made by local inhabitants. In this process the
whole study area was divided into different sections to get the maximum diversity of
plant species. The sampling sites were selected based on land use pattern, topography
and floristic composition of the study area. The other relevant data on bio-diversity,
like economically important plant species and medicinal plant, rare and endangered
species in the study area was collected from secondary sources like forest and wild
life departments. The project area does not fall within 15 km of any ecologically
sensitive area/migratory corridor. Therefore, all data of this study were collected
around 10 km radius from the project site by the team of State Forest Research and
Training Institute, Raipur.
The assessment of fauna was done on the bases of primary survey,
secondary data collected from Working Plan, Forest Department, Wildlife Wing etc.
The presence of wildlife was also confirmed from the local inhabitants depending on
the animal sightings and the frequency of their visits in the project area.
Line transects method had been applied for the bird count and their habitat
survey. Line-transect distance sampling methods were also used to estimate the
abundance of many biological populations such as animals, birds and plant species
including nonliving things. In a line-transect survey method, an observer moves along
a transect line and note the location of all birds detected to the. The bird diversity has
been estimated in four major habitat types, i.e. human habitation, agriculture fields,
forest area and water-bodies. The observations were made based on direct sightings
and birdcalls. Detail list of floral and faunal species in the core and buffer zone are
given in the following tables.
