Assessment 3

One of the prevalent culture that I encountered is one of the most renowned
refinement that almost everyone is seemingly fond of and has been aware of. This also became
the focal subject of my case study that I conducted during 11th grade while taking up the course
Practical Research 1 entitled “Korean Wave: A Perception for Teen Agers.” This culture is no
other than the Korean Pop Culture (KPOP) or also known as the Hallyu, the prominence of the
South-Korean multi-faceted entertainment industry (pervasiveness of Korean music, novel or
drama, skincare regimens and other, i.e.) which become the major driver of global culture
(Romano, 2018).
Hallyu, in my personal perspective, has become a huge factor in recreating my views
and ideologies. As I am into the field of art (writing), I become fond of how the formerly said
industry entails a unique story and rolling. Even though I am not a total fan of everything that is
related to Korean wave, I must say that the way they portray art is just distinctive. The quality
and the overall effect of their art fascinates me. I remember my respondent profoundly
explaining why she is into KPOP. She said that it is more than the charisma and physique of the
portrayers of a certain drama, let us say for example, it is rather the new perspective, new
knowledge or sight that seems to be totally different from our usual setting. It is something
“new” and “dynamic” that generated the enthusiasm of the people, especially of the avid fans. As
said, these, through a virtual platform, plays a significant role in one’s psychological being, thus
indeed speaks to one’s behavior. Technically speaking, I can attest myself. Like how being a fan
affects one’s characteristics and attitude, I tend to adapt their language unintentionally and just
simply found myself uttering it. Moreover, it significantly employs the standards being adhered
and shown in their art and practically become the basis of a good production. Overall, it is the
exemplary art that has been showcased.
Hallyu has grown erratically in the global setting. As the celebrated South Korean
celebrities (BTS e.g.) have stooped to the international arena like Hollywood, all other industries
and the South Korean culture as whole have also been showcased. For instance, as people get to
recognize their good looks, they then dig into the beauty regimen that they do and of course that
is an open door for their skincare industry. Here in the Philippines, almost everything speaks
KPOP. The boy bands like the BGYO are vividly adapting the KPOP theme, likewise the
cosmetics and apparels are so Korean inspired. Basically when I talk to random people in our
neighborhood, I just know that they know who Lee Min Ho or Song Jung Ki is. That is how the
Korean culture had grown its prominence from global up to the local set-up.
The South Korean Fever somehow has an equal share of demerits. As this culture
becomes bigger and given the stability of the Filipinos to adapt, it somehow becomes an issue to
the sense of patriotism. Nonetheless, it is after all a big deal and this is every contemporary
Filipinos challenge, to manage their keenness towards KPOP and their kin responsibility of
compatriotism.
