You were also introduced to time lines, that is, the time intervals in relation to the time before
and after the birth of Jesus Christ.
The time interval before the birth of Jesus Christ is denoted BC while AD refers to the time
interval after the birth of Jesus Christ.
AD stands for Anno Dominni (Latin word) and BC stands for Before Christ’s birth.
Usually a number line is used to explain AD and BC concepts for easy understanding.

4 Find the area of the following figures:

a.

Answer
The figure is made up of a semicircle and a rectangle with one side cut a
semicircle inside
Area of a semicircle = 𝜋r2
2
Diameter = 14cm
∴ Radius = 7cm
22
= x 7cm x 7cm
7

= 22 x 7cm
= 154cm2 ÷ 2
= 77 cm2
ZIKOMO MASESE BANDA 29 0999246769/0881871947
Area of a rectangle =LxB
= 20cm x 14cm
= 280cm2
∴ The area of the figure = 77 cm2 + 280cm2 – 77 cm2
= 280cm2

b.

Answer
The figure is made up of a parallelogram and a semicircle
Area of a parallelogram = base x height
= 16cm x 8cm
= 128cm2

Area of a semicircle = 𝜋r2

2
Diameter = 14cm
∴ Radius = 7cm
22
= x 7cm x 7cm
7

= 22 x 7cm
= 154cm2 ÷ 2
= 77 cm2

ZIKOMO MASESE BANDA 30 0999246769/0881871947

∴ Area of the figure = 128cm2 + 77cm2
= 205cm2

5 A circle of diameter 3m is cut out of a sheet of iron 3m square. What is the

area of the remaining part?
Answer
The figure is made up of a circle and a square.
Area of a circle = 𝜋r2
Diameter = 3m
∴ Radius = 1.5m
22
= x 1.5m x 1.5m
7
49.5
= 7

= 7.1m2

Area of a square = S2
= 3m x 3m
