Why Project Management and Project Management Plan


The scope is highly technical, the time schedule is tight and the budget must be managed.
With so many aspects to balance all at once, this should be well managed if you apply
the Construction Project Management Plan techniques.
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling
resources to achieve specific goals.

In our practical life, we do project management all the time, For example, if you are
planning to drive your car to go to work – This is a project– you will find that you did
planning your small project (Going to work) Do you believe it ?!, Let’s see what would be
your Sample Project Management Plan:
You have a start date (Time to wake up) and a completion date (Time you finish your work).

You have your activity list:

1. Wake up at 7:30 AM.


2. Complete your dress-up, have breakfast, and prepare a sandwich for lunch by 8:00
AM.
3. Drive your car through your favorite road to work from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM.
4. Work from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
5. Have your lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
6. Resume your work from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
7. Drive your car back home from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

Project management:

You don’t believe me that you did all of that? Let’s check out. What if a friend of yours asked
you to pick him up to work on your way and he said to you he would be waiting for you 10
minutes away from your home, You will find yourself telling him okay wait for me at 8:10,
why 8:10? Because you know that you will move from your home by 8:00 and the distance
to your friend is 10 minutes you should be there by 8:10.
This is a basic Project Management Skill.
Do you know that you plan for procurement in your Sample Project Management Plan? Yes,
you bought the bread and the cheese for your lunch sandwich one day ago.
Can you imagine that you planned the risks also? Yes, by choosing the long but not crowded
road (Your favorite Road) you mitigate the risk of being late for your work.
So, if you succeed in going to your work on time you are a good planner. But this is not the
only project you can plan for, there are much bigger projects we want to learn how to plan
and that is the aim of our course.
Scheduling is just one component of planning. Good planning takes into account all the
knowledge areas. That means you need to consider budgets, procurement, risks, human
resources, etc. as part of your planning.
As we noticed in the difference between planning and scheduling, to manage a project we
need to build up a management plan not just a schedule !!!
This project management plan contains the required information to update the current
status of the project and should be updated whenever a new event occurs to affect the
current plan, i.e. ( delays in procurement, variation orders, or new risks…etc.)
