Population_Lesson13

The document discusses the relationship between population and carrying capacity, defining key terms such as population size, density, and overpopulation. It explains how population changes can indicate environmental issues and outlines limiting factors that affect population growth. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of carrying capacity in sustaining species within their habitats.

Relationship between

Population and
Carrying Capacity
Lesson 13
POPULATION
A group of organisms of the same species that
live in a certain area or community.
An increase or decrease in the
population of organisms can be
an indicator of potential
problems in an organism’s
environment.
POPULATION SIZE
It is the total number of members of a population.
What do you think causes a
population size to increase?

What causes a population size

to decrease?
POPULATION DENSITY
It is the average number of individuals in
a population per unit of area or volume.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A school has 800 students and occupies
an area of 2 hectares. What is the
student density per hectare?
SOLUTION
POPULATION DENSITY
If population density is If population density is
high, a lot of organisms low, few organisms
crowd into a certain area. crowd into a certain area.
OVERPOPULATION
It refers to a situation
where a population
exceeds its sustainable
size within a particular
environment or habitat.
CARRYING CAPACITY
It refers to the maximum number of species
whose basic needs could be continually
supported or sustained by the resources in their
habitat without degrading and destroying the
environment.
CARRYING CAPACITY
The carrying capacity of
Makabuhay Lake equals
150 fish.
Can less than 150 fishes live in
Makabuhay lake?

Can more than 150 fishes live in

Makabuhay lake?
CARRYING CAPACITY
Let’s say there are 140 fishes in
Makabuhay Lake. When the
amount of resources in this lake
decreases and the carrying
capacity drops from 150 to 100
fishes. What will happen to this
fish population? Why will this
happen?
LIMITING FACTORS
are environmental conditions that restrict the
growth, abundance, or distribution of a
population within an ecosystem.
DENSITY-DEPENDENT LIMITING FACTORS
Factors whose effects on population growth
change depending on population density. These
factors have a stronger impact as population size
increases.
DENSITY-INDEPENDENT LIMITING FACTORS
Factors that affect population size regardless of
how many individuals are present. These factors
are usually environmental or human-related.
