The laboratory report details a flexural bending test conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of steel beam members under bending loads. The experiment confirms the linear relationships between stress and moment, as well as deflection and load, while also noting discrepancies between experimental and theoretical data. Overall, the findings validate the elastic flexure formulas for pure bending of steel beams, despite some experimental errors.

Flexural Bending Test

Abstract
The flexural bending test is a crucial evaluation method used to determine the
steel beam member properties of materials under bending loads. This study
investigates the normal stress and radius of curvature of the material by
subjecting standardized beam-shaped specimens to controlled bending
conditions. Using a three-point loading configuration, the test measures the
relationship between applied load and deflection.

Objectives
This experiment aims to investigate the mechanical properties of steel beam
member through flexural testing. To verify the elastic flexure formulas for pure
bending of a steel beam:

Test setup and specimen

Test procedures
1. Fix two knife-edge supports on the frame and lay the 25*6mm2 beam
across
500mm span.
2. Add hanger clamps to the beam 125mm from each knife edge.
3. Connect the lead wire from the train gauges, which are mounted on the
beam, to
the SB-10 switch balance unit. Connect also the P-3500 strain indicator to the
SB-10 switch balance unit.
4. Set up three dial gauges at two load points and at mid span respectively.
5. Set the initial readings of dial gauges and the readings of the strain gauges
to
zero respectively.
6. Apply weights to each of the hangers in an increment of 20N until 100N.
Record
the dial gauges readings and the strain gauges reading.

Summary and Conclusion

In the experiment, the relationship of steel beam‘s bending
properties of experimental values and theoretical values were
found out. Those tables show that the stress is proportional to
the moment at both the top and bottom, so we can deduce that
the radius of curvature is inversely proportional to moment.
In addition, the relationship between Stress and Moment can
be observed from the table, which is linear. As well as the
Deflection and Load. By comparing the experimental results
with the theoretical data, the formula of elastic flexure of the
pure bending of steel beam, and the linear and proportional
relationships between Stress and Bending Moment, Deflection
and Load are verified. The theoretical diagrams is ideal, while
the experimental data is different to the theoretical data. It
seems that there exist some errors in this experiment.
