SIP Title: Orange Peel in Making Orange Essential Oil

Background of the Study

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that can be used in aromatherapy, a kind of
complementary medicine that uses smell to improve your health or applied topically to the skin
(health.clevelandclinic.org). Essential oils are used to uplift mood, calming, and can be used as
antidepressant.
This project aimed to make a home-made or do-it-yourself (DIY) essential oil in which the
ingredients can be found just in the corners of the kitchen. Orange peel is one of the ingredients that is
used in this project. Orange peels are rich in vitamin C (which can whiten dark spots), fiber, and
polyphenols (McGrane, 2021).
An ample amount of olive oil will also be used and mixed with our orange peels. According to
Joe Leech (2024), olive oil may offer several health benefits such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory
properties. It can be also used as a natural skin moisturizer and it is non-toxic and hypoallergenic and
may repair skin damage.

Objectives of the Study

This project’s goals are:
1. To determine the benefits as an aromatherapy of the home-made orange essential oil;
2. To determine the effectivity of the orange essential oil to whiten dark spots of the skin;
and
3. To determine the quality of the home-made orange essential oil compared to the
commercially available essential oils.

Significance of the Study

This project aimed to explore the potential of orange peels as a component in making home-
made essential oil. It can be useful to those people who relies their wellness on essential oils that helps
them to feel calm and relaxed. It will also give confidence to the people who wish to have fair skin.

Scope and Limitations

This project will focus in using orange peels as an ingredient in making an essential oil. The
effectivity of its benefits will be tested to some random grade four students. These students will be given
a week to see how effective the project is.

Methodology
This project will use experimentation to determine the effectivity and benefits of the home-made
orange essential oil.
According to Bell (2009), experimental research is best to use when conducting research using
two variables, independent and dependent. Independent variables can be manipulated to apply to the
dependent variables and the effect is measured. This measurement usually happens over a significant
time frame to establish conditions and conclusions about the relationship between these two variables.
Furthermore, since this study will be based on observation, calculation, comparison, and logic,
experimental research must be utilized. This design is also a helpful approach when time is a factor in
establishing cause-and-effect relationship.

Result and Discussion

After procurement of ingredients and preparation of materials used in the Science
laboratory, ten oranges will be peeled, cut into a very small pieces and let it dry. After the
orange peels has dried, 200 mL of olive oil will be added. To make a good mixture, combine
the orange peels and the olive oil in a blender. Put the mixture in a clean container jar and
set aside for 5 days. With the use of a strainer and clean cloth, press and squeeze the
mixture to remove the pulps and the oil will be extracted from the mixture. The oil will be
put in a small bottle and will be ready for testing.
