ERTMS TRACKSIDE

COMPONENTS

@Babu Mamidi
Control Centre
1/5

- Not an ERTMS component but a vital part

of the railway signaling system.
- Oversees train routes and movements
within a specific area.
- Commands multiple interlockings across
one or several railway lines.

@Babu Mamidi
Interlocking
- Not an ERTMS component but crucial for
railway safety.
- Ensures safety by:
- Monitoring signal and point settings.
- Preventing incompatible routes from
being established simultaneously.
- Interfaces with the ERTMS trackside
subsystem in most configurations.

@Babu Mamidi
Balises (Eurobalises)
1/5

Fixed-location devices embedded in the

tracks.
- A passive device installed on the track.
- These can be fixed balises (static data) or
switchable balises (dynamic data), such as:
- Speed limits.
- Position references.
- Gradient information.
- Powered by the train’s Balise Transmission
Module (BTM) when the train passes over it.

@Babu Mamidi
Euroloop
- A semi-continuous transmission system
providing signaling in-fill information.
- Supplies train drivers with data about the
next main signal in their direction of travel.
- Improves system responsiveness by
offering intermittent updates in real-time.

@Babu Mamidi
Radio Infill Unit (RIU)
- An optional component for ETCS Level 1 to
boost performance.
- Sends Eurobalise messages to trains in
advance via GSM-R communication.
- Enables continuous updates, reducing the
need for physical balise readings.

@Babu Mamidi
Lineside Electronic Unit (LEU)

- Acts as an interface between the

Eurobalise and the interlocking system.
- Collects data from interlocking and
lineside signaling.
- Sends encoded messages (telegrams) to
Eurobalises for transmission to onboard
systems.

@Babu Mamidi
Radio Block Centre (RBC) 1/5

- A central safety unit for ETCS

Level 2 and above.
- Key functions:
- Receives train position updates.
- Sends movement authority and
other operational instructions.
- Interacts with interlocking
systems to gather signaling data.
- Communicates with adjacent
RBCs for seamless operations.
- real-time updates to trains via
GSM-R.

@Babu Mamidi
Track Circuits / Axle Counters
Used to detect the presence or absence of
trains in specific sections of the track. This
information is crucial for safe train
operations, especially in Level 1.

@Babu Mamidi
Lineside Signals (for Level 1) 1/5

Traditional signals are still used in ERTMS

Level 1 to convey visual movement
authorities to drivers, complementing the
onboard system.

@Babu Mamidi
GSM-R Infrastructure

Dedicated railway communication

infrastructure that enables data exchange
between RBCs and onboard systems,
ensuring reliable and secure
communication.
