Concept Formation Experiment
Concept Formation Experiment
Aim
To study the process of conceive formation in the subject.
Introduction
A concept is defined as a common property among all objects or events of a given category
which are similar to each other in one or more than one way. It is a fundamental step in
higher forms of thinking. The process by which we discover features which are common to a
large number of objects and associate these with a symbol which thereafter, may be applied
to other similar objects is called as Concept formation. Concept formation involves
abstraction and generalization.
Haufmann and Kasanin developed a test to study concept formation. In this test the subjects
task is to sort out the blocks presented into four categories and to form and specify the basis
for the classification. It is clear that this test calls for a wide variety of reactions. It involves
trials and error kind of problem solving in which the subject tries to correct reactions.
It also includes reasoning type of problem solving wherein the subject assumes an abstract
attitude and proceeds with the solution.
Any subject who has a cognitive difficulty due to brain injury or schizophrenia will
experience difficulties with the experiment.
The Haufmann and Kasanin’s box contains 22 blocks different in colour, shape, size and
height. The blocks are of white, yellow, red, green and blue colours with the surface shapes
of triangular, quadrilateral, square, hexagonal, circular and semi-circular. They are large,
small, tall and flat.
Material required
1. Haufmann and Kasanin’s box
2. Paper
3. Pencil
Procedure
The Haufmann and Kasanin concept formation apparatus consisting of 22 wooden blocks of
different colours shapes heights and sizes.
The subject is given the following instructions, "There are 22 blocks. Classify the blocks into
4 groups using any principle. Do not turn the blocks, only move them. After grouping them
indicate the basis on which you have grouped them.’ Time taken and criteria used for each
trial is noted. After each trial the subject’s categorization is checked and the blocks
incorrectly classified will be shown to the subject. The blocks are then reshuffled and the
subject is asked to try again. The subject is given maximum five trials. Introspection report is
taken from the subject.

Precautions
The following precautions are taken into consideration while conducting the experiment:
1. Block should be properly mixed before a start each time.
2. The subject should not be allowed to lift the blocks. It should be only moved.
Results
The resulted are tabulated under Table 1 and Table 2 as given below:
