PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

In this module, the curriculum aims to provide students with

planned and balanced programming to develop the knowledge, skills,
and attitudes for physically active and healthy lifestyles. The vision
is physically active and healthy lifestyles for all students.

Furthermore, there are specific learning outcomes identified for

each GLO and for each grade to help students learn about active healthy
lifestyles. For more detail for each grade, visit each grade level for lists
of student learning outcomes or My Child in School. For balanced
programming in physical education, students should receive instruction
in the following five physical activity categories

This module contains four (4) lessons. Analyze the lesson

carefully. You must impart deep understanding in every instructions and
details as you go through the module. Work on exercises carefully and
submit your output to your teacher or to the faculty In-charge. The teacher
ought to have primary information on each and every lecture. The last
over-all performance will accordingly learn by heart on your very own
efforts. Additional readings and exploration in the internet is a
recommendation to go together with its content.

God Bless and have a meaningful learning!

At the end of this unit, the students should be able to:

1. Define teaching, learning, and teaching learning process in physical

education and health education;
2. Identify the seven principles of effective education in teaching learning
process and learning aspects;
3. Compare between learning teaching process and nursing process;

Lesson 1

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

The subject Physical Education develops students physically

through an understanding of games concepts relating to their teammates
and through self-expression, they grow intellectually and mature
emotionally.

Physical Education is “to educate students through physical

activities”. It aims to develop students’ physical competence and
knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to
perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of
an active and healthy lifestyle. It also develops in students, both as
individuals and in groups or teams, confidence and generic skills,
especially those of collaboration, communication, creativity, critical
thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together with the nurturing
of positive values and attitudes in PE, are foundations for students’
lifelong and life-wide learning to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The aims of Physical Education are to equip students with the

skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities with
understanding. Impart knowledge on how to develop and maintain
physical fitness that develops positive self-esteem through body
awareness and control. It really helps both of the teacher and learner to
encourage regular participation in physical activity. Understanding of the
implications and benefits of an involvement in physical activities should
be imparted to enables students to observe safety skills and habits.
Developing the students to appreciate concepts of fair play and good
sportsmanship, understanding and application of critical thinking skills to
PE.

The Physical Education department believes that each student

should be exposed to a healthful lifestyle that includes consistent
exercise; proper diet, and healthy habits.

A consistent exercise program is emphasized throughout the

curriculum by providing daily exercise as part of the lesson. In each
class, students are exposed to the flexibility, cardiovascular, agility, and
strength components of exercise.

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

The importance of flexibility is discussed in class. Flexibility is

important in preventing injury and increasing an individual’s
performance. The students do a series of stretches before activities. In
some classes cardiovascular awareness and improvement are measured
through the student’s heart rate. Students find their resting heart rates
by taking their pulse every morning before getting out of bed for five
consecutive days. They find an average pulse for five days and then do a
computation to find their target heart rate for exercise. The purpose of
finding the students’ resting and maximum heart rates is to give them
the knowledge of how hard they need to exercise to have an effect on
their fitness levels. The importance of flexibility is discussed in class.

Another part of the physical components is the agility and its

quickness is discussed in class, and ways to improve agility. Class
activities include running with change of direction regularly. The
importance of strength is also discussed in class, as are healthy ways to
improve and build strength. Physical Education class also emphasizes
proper diet, body weight, and health issues. Students participate in
regular discussions on the relationship between body weight and body
fat, and how this relationship affects health.

Philosophy

A quality Health and Physical Education Program supports the

physical, intellectual, and social-emotional development of students.
When students maintain adequate levels of physical fitness and make
healthy choices, the conditions and opportunities for learning also
increase. For these reasons, Health and Physical Education play an
integral role in a comprehensive educational program. To facilitate
these optimal levels of wellness, the Health and Physical Education
Department is committed to delivering a comprehensive, sequential
curriculum K-12. The program will engage and help inspire students to
pursue a lifetime of fitness-related activities and healthy decisions.

The goal of Physical Education program is to provide students with

the knowledge and skills to value and apply physical activity and its
benefits for a lifetime. Through active participation in movement, and
sport, students will foster an appreciation for personal fitness and other

social skills vital to becoming healthy, productive members of the

community. Each lesson is planned to maximize the amount of time
students are engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity.

The goal of Health program is to provide students with the skills

and health literacy necessary to make informed decisions. Students will
acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to address health concerns at
various stages of development. Students are encouraged to achieve
optimal health through recognizing health issues and applying
preventative strategies to promote optimal wellness. By connecting
academic content to real-life scenarios, students understand the impact
of personal choices and external factors on individual health and the
overall health of the community.

The Health and Physical Education Department is committed to

providing students with knowledge and skills necessary to link health and
physical education to the foundation of a healthy, productive, and
fulfilling life.

Ideally, education should nurture the healthy development of the
whole child, including their mind, body, and spirit. Although it’s not
considered one of the core subjects, physical education is indeed critical
for elementary and secondary students. If you have a passion for

Module 1

physical activity, sports, and for teaching children, you could make a
great physical education teacher. Read more to learn about the
important characteristics of a PE teacher.

Interpersonal Skill

PE teachers do hands-on instruction at every class, which means

it’s essential for them to have advanced interpersonal skills. This goes
beyond communication know-how. Interpersonal skills also include the
ability to make genuine connections with others, to see things from their
perspective, and to be sensitive to the emotional needs of others. Great
physical education teachers intuitively understand how to convey
respectfulness, positivity, and cooperativeness.

Collaboration

Just like teachers of academic subjects, PE teachers work on

physical education programs and lesson plans, but great PE teachers
collaborate with the students’ academic teachers to align physical
exercise with the content that they’re learning in other classes. They
recognize that all students have varying athletic abilities and that
sometimes, activities need to be modifies to accommodate the topic
being addressed by their other teachers. Successful PPE teachers should
also adapt their instruction style to help every student fully understand
key concepts.

Enthusiasm

Students are much more excited about going to class when they
know that their teacher is, too. Great PE teachers strive to inspire a love
of sports and nutrition in their students. They also create a welcoming
environment in which every student feels respected and valued, both by
the teacher and by other students.

Athletic Ability

Although it isn’t necessary for PE teachers to have the physical

prowess of professional athletes, they do tend to be physically fit, as it’s
important to set a good example of health and wellness for the students.

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

PE teachers should also be reasonably skilled at playing the sports

they’re teaching to the students.

Creativity

Students respond well to teachers who exhibit creativity in lesson

planning and implementation. It encourages students to have fun and
actively engage in the class. Great physical education teachers aren’t
afraid to break the mold every now and then. They’re willing to try new
things, solicit feedback from their students and develop meaningful
lesson plans.

Character

Aside from family members, teachers are some of the most

influential individuals in a child’s life. Students will remember their
teachers and the core lessons imparted to them long after they grow up
and start careers of their own. As a future PE teacher, your students
might not remember everything you say about rules of flag football or
the proper way to block a goal in floor hockey. What they will always
remember, however, is the lessons in character you can teach them.
These lessons are best taught by example, so strive to model the traits
you wish to see in your own students, such as good sportsmanship,
respectfulness, empathy and compassion.

You can become an inspiring role model for elementary, middle,
or high schools students with a career in physical education.

Characteristics and quality of a PE teacher

A physical education teacher is trained and educated in athletic

training and physical education. The physical education teacher also has
a four-year degree in education with a focus on health and physical
education, kinesiology or physiology. The qualities of a P.E. teacher are
difficult to assess, but easy to spot. Morals, character, knowledge and
communications skills are all good qualities in a physical education
teacher.

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

As a teacher, you should be exemplary good at character. A

physical education teacher must exhibit exemplary character. Working
with children is a demanding task and cannot be done by just any
person. His honesty cannot be questioned, and morals must be dominate
in a P.E. teacher. The teachers must treat every student equally and
fairly. A P.E. teacher's character must be beyond question because of the
close proximity the teacher has with the students. He must touch the
students to show the correct stretching method and how to properly
throw a ball and assist the students with the proper exercise techniques.

Also, excellent communications skills enable the physical

education teacher to explain activities to the students. A P.E. teacher
cannot be afraid to speak in front of the students. Directing and
instructing physical activity is an essential part of physical education.
Communicating the rules of the physical activity chosen that school day
or the techniques utilized by the students to perform a physical activity
are both important instructional qualities of a P.E. teacher. Possessing
communications skills in a classroom setting is important since many P.E.
teachers instruct students in health and wellness classes such as
nutrition and biology.

Good organizational skills are another quality a P.E. teacher must

possess. The physical education teacher must record and report on the
progress of each student. Maintaining an accurate record of this progress
is important to enable the P.E. teacher to record the grades and
evaluate the physical skills of her students. The P.E. teacher has to
maintain organization of the athletic programs the students are
performing. This organizational quality allows the P.E. teacher to assess
the effects of each activity from day-to-day. The teacher must keep
track of which students need more attention and which students are
more physically capable.

A good P.E. teacher is enthusiastic about his job. This quality can
be passed onto the students because if the teacher is enthusiastic, the
students become enthusiastic about the activities or athletic training. A
P.E. teacher must make the activities fun, competitive and cooperative
all at the same time. This breeds teamwork and friendships, while still
keeping the students active. This quality also includes motivating
students to perform the physical activities and to have fun performing
those activities. Recognizing what motivates each student in the P.E.

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

class is a quality that every P.E. teacher needs. Many P.E. teachers’
coach sports teams, and the ability to motivate players is key to success.

A P.E. teacher must be educated and knowledgeable in a variety

of sports such as tennis, basketball, football, baseball, softball, rock
climbing, aerobics, gymnastics and a host of other disciplines. The
quality of recognizing what sports require teamwork and what sports are
individual is a P.E. teacher's responsibility. P.E. teachers must be
physically fit themselves. They must be mindful of the nutritional needs
of the students and teach those nutritional needs.

The Core Issues on teaching PE and Health

Teachers are fragile in crisis where they (we) face enormous

barriers to quality professional development. What are they and how can
we begin to address or reverse professional development?

In teaching Physical Education and Health Education reveals

several areas of continuing concern regarding current trends in PE and
sports. These area embrace: physical education not being delivered or
delivered without quality, insufficient time allocation, lack of competent
qualified and/or materials, large class sizes. It is noted that the amount
of time dedicated to physical education has been diminished in the
school curriculum. The responsibility rests directly on the shoulders of
physical educators to ensure that the importance of their subject matter
is understood and embraced as a part of their subject matter is
understood and embraced as a part of their schools’ overall curriculum.
Today, more than ever, the physical education and health education
curriculum needs to be linked to the overall well-being of children and
youth as they matriculate through the curriculum. As has been noted,
lessons learned at an early age carry into adult life. Furthermore, the
importance of physical activity as a way of creating attentiveness in the
classroom has not been recognized.

School Issues

The education system is seen as a basic subsystems and processes,

comprising the inputs, processes and outputs; the inputs include factors
relating to the students, teachers, physical facilities of the school, and
infrastructure, the processes include activities of teaching, learning,
administration, and the outputs includes examination.

Module 1
PROCESS IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

The issue of sustainable development can show different contours

when one relates it with the education scenario. It may have a more
specific meaning within the school when dealing with cross-cutting
themes. Most of the issues that schools are encountering in terms of
physical education are lacking of facilities and equipment. In remote
areas, facilities are the main problem in delivering lesson for physical
education most especially in outdoor activities. A teacher itself is an
instructional material but without the help of facilities and other needs.
There are no proper training for aspiring athletes and learners who
engage in physical activities. Also, equipment is one of the most
important things for the lesson to be demonstrated well. You cannot just
demonstrate a game, sports, or any physical activities if there are no
equipment.

There are some situations like teacher and school. Some school
are blessed with facilities, equipment, and the school itself but some
issues that schools are facing are teachers. There are teachers who
cannot still deliver the lesson well. These are problems related to
situations that become unsustainable, such as lack of material resources,
precarious school management, and teacher disengagement.

Local Issues

As we age our participation in sport and physical activity generally

decreases. Our physical activity levels peak during adolescence, while
activity levels tend to be at their lowest beyond the age of 65 years.
Generally, the greater variety of physical activity you participate in
when you are young, the more likely you are to be sufficiently active as
you age. In addition, if your parents and siblings are very active or
inactive, you are most likely to follow in their footsteps and adopt a
similar lifestyle, for as we know we are all a product of our
environment. As people get older, their interests, needs and physical
ability can change, so the more ways in which one can be active, the
greater the ability to overcome these barriers. It is vital that people of
all ages maintain an adequate level of physical activity and sport as the
health benefits of participating on a regular basis never subside.

One of the main problem is gender equality. Most of the sports are
basically judged by how a person dwell with his or her capability.
Another one is culture diversity, in physical education. To aspiring
athletes and one united sports, language barrier is one of the main cause

not to communicate but a sport’s rule or any physical activity known by

international is to be understood.

Global Issues

There have been major changes in physical education over the

years. Physical education is now defined as the overall development of
health and wellness. It's no longer seen as just a separate class or
subject, but an integrated content area with its own standards and
objectives. People everywhere are recognizing the importance of
physical education beyond the focus on movement, and its role in
creating a healthy lifestyle.
Current research, improved resources, and specified standards have all
enlightened people to see how vital physical education is in elementary
and secondary schools. Let's take a look at some specific historical
issues.
