Number Sense
1
Number:
A number is an arithmetic value used for representing the quantity and used in making
calculations.

We use digits to represent the numbers. It is a symbol ranging from 0 to 9.

Every day the students come across the activity of counting. Counting can be done only if
the student has some idea about the numbers. Numbers are also represented in terms of
words.
Let us recognize few numbers:

Answer: 10

One-digit Number:
These digits when used alone result in single digit or one-digit numbers.
Starting from 0 and going up to 9.

Two-digit Number:
When the digits are used in a combination, they form two digits or bigger numbers.
The smallest two-digit number is 10
The greatest two-digit number is 99
Copyright © CREST Olympiads 4 www.crestolympiads.com
Forth Counting:
Adding one to the numbers help us to obtain the next number.
For example: The number which comes just after 11 is (11 + 1) = 12.

Back Counting:
Subtracting one from the numbers help us to obtain the previous number.
For example: The number which comes just before 11 is (11 - 1) = 10.

Place value
It can be defined as the value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position
in the number.
In a two-digit number, the place value of the ten-place digit is 10 times of the digit.
For example: 92
It can also be written as 90 + 2
9 × 10 + 2

The number at the ten’s place is multiplied with 10 and added to the number at the unit’s
place.
In words, we write it as Ninety-two.
548 can be represented in the form of hundreds, tens and ones.

The smallest three-digit number = 100

The greatest three-digit number = 999

Chapter
Addition
2
Addition
Addition means the sum of two or more numbers. Let’s try to understand it with the help of
some diagrams.
Count the number of birds and the number of monkeys in the figure given below:

There are two birds and one monkey in the picture.

Few more monkeys come to meet the first monkey.

Add the total number of monkeys in the picture given below.

1+2=3

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 14 www.crestolympiads.com

This is the way how we add numbers.
We can also add two-digit numbers. In this case, we come across the concept of carryover.

When the unit’s place sums up to more than or equal to 10, the last digit of the sum is kept
as it is in the unit’s place and the ten’s digit of the sum is carried over to the ten’s place.
For example: In the picture given above, 14 is added to 27.
When we add the digits at the unit’s place, (7 + 4), we obtain 11 which is greater than 10.
So, we will keep the unit’s place as it is (1). And take the digit at the ten’s place of the
carryover (1) to the ten’s place of the given numbers (2 and 1). Now we will add (2 + 1 + 1) =
4
Hence, our total sum = 41.
Let us take some examples to understand it better.
Example 1:
Find the total number of animals.

a. 1

b. 2

c. 3

d. 4

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 15 www.crestolympiads.com

Solution: Correct answer is d
There are 2 cats and 3 dogs in the image given above.
So,

When we add 2 + 3, we obtain 5 as the result.

Hence, 5 is the correct answer.
Example 2:
Robert has 13 apples with him. If Robert’s mom gives him 4 apples more, what is the total
number of apples with Robert?
a. 16
b. 17
c. 18
d. 19

Solution: Correct answer is b

Number of apples with Robert initially = 13
Number of apples given by Robert’s mom = 4
Total apples = 13 + 4 = 17
Hence, option b is the correct answer.

Chapter
Subtraction
3
Subtraction
Subtraction is taking away or reducing some amount from the existing amount.
For example, Nancy is carrying 6 eggs out of which two eggs broke while returning home,
then Nancy will be left with 6 – 2 = 4 eggs.

We can perform subtraction in columns as well.

When the top value is more than the bottom value, then we can directly subtract the
numbers. For example, 47 – 12

Step 1:

Step 2:

But when the top number is lesser in value than the number present at the bottom, then we
need to use the concept of borrowing.
Copyright © CREST Olympiads 22 www.crestolympiads.com
For example, 32 – 15

Hence, 32 – 15 = 17.
Let us solve some examples to understand them better.
Example 1:
What is the difference between 19 and 8?
a. 11
b. 1
c. 10
d. 7

Solution: Correct answer is a

We need to find the difference between 19 and 8.

For performing subtraction in columns, place the greater value at the top and the smaller
value below it.
19
-8
-------
11
9 – 8 = 1 and 1 – 0 = 1
Hence, 19 – 8 = 11.
Example 2:

Chapter
Length
4
Length
Length is the measurement of distance. With the help of length, a student can determine
how long or how short a given thing is. Everything around us has a length.
For example, the room, the walls, etc.
The various tools which we have been using to measure length are measuring tape, ruler,
hand span, stick, etc. We compare the length of the object with the measurement tool and
thus determine the length of the object in terms of the measuring tool.

Measurements are done in some units.

Let’s suppose your home is 4 kilometres away from your friend’s home. Here, the measuring
unit is kilometres. Bigger lengths are measured in kilometres.
Similarly, the pencil is 4 centimetres long. Here, the measuring unit is centimetres. This unit
is comparatively smaller than a kilometre.
Note:
1 kilometre = 1000 metres
1 metre = 100 centimetres
We write Centimetres as cm, metres as m and Kilometres as km in short form.
Let us solve some examples and understand them better.

Example 1:
The length of the teddy bear is equal to ___________ boxes.

a. 4
b. 3
c. 2
d. 1

Solution: The correct answer is b

We need to start counting the number of boxes from the bottom to the box where the teddy
ends.
Since the teddy ends at the third box, therefore the length of the teddy bear is equal to 3
boxes.
Example 2:
Which of the following is the longest?

a. Yellow pencil
b. Black pencil
c. Stick
d. Can’t be determined

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 31 www.crestolympiads.com

Solution: Correct answer is c
The measuring tool is a centimetre ruler.
The length of the object is measured as ending point – starting point
The length of stick = 13 – 3 = 10 cm
The length of yellow pencil = 20 – 11 = 9 cm

The length of black pencil = 8 – 0 = 8 cm

10 cm > 9 cm > 8 cm
Hence, the stick will have the longest length.

Weight

Weight
Weight is the measurement of how heavy something or somebody is. Depending upon the
matter present inside their body. We classify objects into the category of heavy and light
depending upon their weight.
If a body has more weight, then the body is called heavy. For example, elephant, car, train,
truck, etc. are all heavy objects.

At the same time, we can call feather, pencil, leaf, paper, etc. as light objects.

We measure the weight using weighing balance and weighing scales of various designs
suited for measuring different objects. Some are shown below:

The weighing balance works on a simple principle.

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 39 www.crestolympiads.com

There are two pans in a weighing balance. The pan which contains the heavier objects goes
down and the pan which contains the lighter object goes up.

If the weight on both the pans is equal then the weight of both objects is equal.

To denote weight, we use some units like kilograms, grams, ounces, pound, etc.

Note:
1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)
1 pound (lbs) = 16 ounces (oz)
Let us solve some examples to understand them better.
Example 1:
Tim, Jim and Pam bring three different objects to the school with their weights mentioned on
them. Find the sum of the weight of the objects brought by Pam and Tim.

Tim Jim Pam

a. 6 kg
b. 15 kg
c. 11 kg
d. 26 kg

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 40 www.crestolympiads.com

Solution: Correct answer is b
The weight of the object brought by Pam = 10 kg
The weight of the object brought by Tim = 5 kg
Sum of their weights = 10 + 5 = 15 kg
Hence, “15 kg” is the correct answer.
Example 2:
Fill in the blank:
Basket A is ________________ Basket B.

a. Equal to
b. Lighter than
c. Heavier than
d. Cannot be determined

Solution: Correct answer is c

There are two pans in a weighing balance. The pan which contains the heavier objects goes
down and the pan which contains the lighter object goes up.
In this question, the pan on the left side (basket A) is going down as compared to the pan on
the right side (basket B).
This means Basket A is heavier than Basket B.
Hence, option c is the correct answer.

Time
Time is measured by a clock. Therefore, we need to know the way of reading the time
appropriately.
The clock can have three hands – Second hand, Minute hand and Hour hand.

Relation between Hour, Minute and Second:

1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds

We can read the time in two formats:

12-hour format and 24-hour format

Copyright © CREST Olympiads 47 www.crestolympiads.com

Here’s how the minute hand’s movement shows different times in an hour.

The first part of the day is known as AM.

It is the time of the day from midnight (12:00 AM) to midday (12:00 PM).
The second part of the day is known as PM.
It is the time of the day from midday (12:00 PM) to midnight (12:00 AM).
This time can be denoted in days, weeks, months and years also.
We know that:
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 month can have 28, 29, 30, 31 days depending upon the month.
1 year = 12 months
Let us solve some questions to understand it better.

Geometric Shapes and Solids
Line: In geometry, a line is defined as a straight one-dimensional figure that extends
endlessly in both directions.

Straight Line: It is a line that runs in one direction without taking any turns or curves.
It can be classified into three types:
Slanting line:
It is defined as a line that is straight but lean or slants towards another direction.

Vertical line: It is a straight line that runs from top to bottom and bottom to top.

Horizontal line: It is a straight line that runs from left to right and right to left.

Curved lines: A bent line is known as a curved line. It is not a straight line.

Some common geometric figures are given below:

Some Prefixes help us to understand the shape of the figure like:

Tri – 3
Quad – 4
Pent – 5
Hex – 6
Hepta – 7
Octa – 8
And many more…

3D shapes:
They are nothing but solids that consist of 3 dimensions, namely - length, breadth, and
height. The "D" in "3D shapes" stands for "Dimensional."
A cube, cuboid, cone and cylinder are the basic 3-dimensional shapes we see around us.

Let us solve some examples for better understanding.

Patterns
Under mathematics, patterns are an interesting topic. The students are expected to focus on
creating continuity between the given entities. Questions related to series and sequences
also form a part of patterns. The intelligence of the student is monitored in terms of how
he/she relates one entity with another.
While solving such questions, the students need to first detect the logic and then apply it to
find the missing part.
Let us have some examples to understand it better.
Example 1:
Identify the next term of the given series:

a. 25
b. 27
c. 28
d. 29

Solution: Correct answer is b

We first need to search the logic in the given question.
Try to figure out the difference between the two consecutive numbers.
21 – 18 = 3
24 – 21 = 3
Therefore, apply the same logic and add 3 to the last term of the series:
24 + 3 = 27
Hence, 27 is the correct answer.

a. Pentagon
b. Hexagon
c. Diamond
d. Circle

Solution: Correct answer is a

The pattern followed is:
Circle >> Pentagon >> Hexagon >> Diamond
So, the complete series looks as follows:

Hence, the pentagon is the correct answer.
