INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE AND

TECHNOLOGY SHIBPUR
B.TECH (ETCE) 5th Semester Mid-Term Examination Sep 2022
Time: 2 hours Full Marks:30
Subject: Analog and Digital Communications (ET3102)

Answer Question No. 1 and any two from the rest

1. (a) Draw the block diagram of a digital communication system.

(b) Compare between the attenuation values of twisted wire and coaxial copper cables used in the
electronic communication systems. Why is the knowledge about the attenuation of the cables
important in the design any practical communication system?
(c) Justify the choice of vestigial side band (VSB) as the modulation scheme in analog TV broad-
casting, while single side band (SSB) modulation was successfully used in analog telephone
communication systems.
(d) In a frequency modulation-demodulation (FM) system, compare between the plots of the average
power spectral density of channel noise at the output of an (i) FM demodulator and (ii) FM
demodulator followed by a de-emphasis filter. Make necessary assumptions.
(e) “A practical FM system, which typically uses pre-emphasis and de-emphasis filters, is a combi-
nation of frequency modulation and phase modulation”- Justify the statement.

2. Prove that for tone modulation of an FM signal, strength of the nth sideband located at ω = ωc +nωm
is Jn (β) , where Jn (β) represents Bessel function of first kind and nth order. Explain the Threshold
phenomenon in FM modulation. Show the necessary plot(s). [5+5]

3. Draw the complete block diagram of a pulse code modulation (PCM) system. Explain the importance
of signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SN Rq )in PCM systems. Prove that in a uniform quantizer, in-
crease of 1bit/sample leads to 6dB improvement in SN Rq . Briefly explain how regenerative repeaters
play a key role in making PCM communication systems more robust than analog communication sys-
tems. [2+1+4+3]

4. For the case of tone modulation, plot an AM modulated signal with modulation index (i) µ =0.5,
(ii) µ =1 and (iii) µ > 1 .
A load resistance of 40Ω carries an AM voltage v(t) (in volts) given by the following equation. Find
(i) the carrier power, (ii) power efficiency of the transmitted signal (iii) repeat the calculation for
power efficiency of the transmitted signal if SSB-C modulation is used without changing any of the
system parameters.

v(t) = 3 1 + 0.8 cos 4 × 103 πt cos (106 πt)
