Homework 13_IntroCtrlSys_Fall2012

Homework 12 for the Introduction to Control Systems course requires students to work in groups to solve two problems involving the design of phase lead compensators for given control systems. Each problem specifies performance criteria for the closed-loop system, including percentage overshoot (POT) and settling time (ts), and requires simulation in Matlab. Students will be evaluated on their teamwork and understanding of the solutions presented in class.

Homework 12

Course: Introduction to Control Systems

Class: CT09TIEN
Due date: 02/11/2012
Work in group to solve the following problems:

Prolem 1 (5 points)
R(s) Y(s)
+ Gc(s) G(s)

Figure 1

Given the control system in figure 1, in which:

8
G( s) 
s ( s  2)
Design the phase lead compensator GC(s) so that the closed-loop system has POT8% and ts0.5sec.
Plot the root locus before and after compensation and simulate the system using Matlab to verify the
result.

Prolem 2 (5 points)
Given the control system in figure 1, in which:
4( s  2 )
G( s) 
s( s  1)( s  8)
Design the phase lead compensator GC(s) so that the closed-loop system has POT10% and ts2.0sec.
Plot the root locus before and after compensation and simulate the system using Matlab to verify the
result.

Remember to work in group and make sure that all your group members understand the
solutions. I will evaluate your teamwork by asking random students to present your solutions in
front of the class.
