1.Brief History:

• 1968: The Club of Rome was established.( Rome, Italy.)

• Stockholm Conference (1972): The first major international conference on the
environment, focusing on balancing development and environmental protection.
• The Limits to Growth (1972): A report by the Club of Rome that predicted dire
consequences if economic and population growth continued unchecked.
• World Conservation Strategy (1980): Published by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it introduced the idea of sustainable development,
combining ecological stability with human development.
• Brundtland Report (1987): Our Common Future by the UN’s World Commission on
Environment and Development (WCED) popularized the term sustainable
development, defining it as-
“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs."
• Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015): These are eight international
development goals established by the United Nations (UN) in the year 2000 during
the Millennium Summit in New York.
• These goals were designed to address some of the world’s most pressing social,
economic, and environmental challenges by 2015.
• Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (2015–2030): These are a set of 17
interconnected global goals adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 as part of
the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

2.Meaning :

• Sustainable development refers to a development approach that seeks to balance

economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection to meet the needs
of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs. It emphasizes long-term solutions that promote equity, resource
efficiency, and ecological balance.
• The concept is often guided by three core pillars:
a.Economic Sustainability: Promoting economic growth and development that
creates wealth and jobs while being efficient and inclusive.
b.Social Sustainability: Ensuring social equity, human rights, and access to basic
needs such as education, healthcare, and housing.

 c.Environmental Sustainability: Protecting natural resources, reducing pollution,
combating climate change, and preserving biodiversity.

3.Nature / Characteristics sustainable development :

1.Interconnectedness

• Sustainable development acknowledges the interdependence of economic growth,

social equity, and environmental protection. It recognizes that actions in one area
affect the others.

2.Long-Term Perspective

• It emphasizes planning and decision-making with a focus on future generations,

ensuring that resources and opportunities remain available over time.

3.Resource Efficiency :

• Sustainable development seeks to use natural resources responsibly, minimizing

waste and promoting renewable resources to avoid depletion and environmental
degradation.

4. Equity and Inclusion:

• It promotes fairness and social justice, addressing the needs of marginalized groups
and reducing disparities in access to resources, education, and opportunities.

5.Adaptability and Resilience:

• Sustainable development encourages systems that can adapt to changes, such as

climate change or economic shifts, to maintain stability and progress.

6.Participatory Approach:

• It involves the active participation of all stakeholders—governments, businesses,

communities, and individuals—to ensure inclusivity in decision-making and
implementation.

7.Precautionary Principle:

• Sustainable development emphasizes preventive measures to avoid environmental

harm, even in the absence of complete scientific certainty.

8.Global and Local Relevance : While the goals are global, sustainable development
must be implemented locally, respecting cultural, economic, and environmental
contexts.

• The scope of sustainable development encompasses a wide range of areas and

activities aimed at fostering balanced progress across environmental, economic,
and social dimensions.

• The Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on 25th September, 2015
established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDG Index) /UN Sustainable Development
Report 2024:

• Published by: Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)

Focus: Tracks progress of countries toward achieving SDGs.
• Recently, the 9th edition was released.
Key Findings:
• 2024 SDR highlights five key findings.

1. On average, only 16 percent of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030,
with the remaining 84 percent showing limited progress or a reversal of progress.
2. The pace of SDG progress varies significantly across country groups. Nordic
countries continue to lead on SDG achievement, with the BRICS countries making
significant progress while poor and vulnerable nations lag far behind.
Note :
a) Finland is ranked first, followed by Sweden (#2), Denmark (#3), Germany (#4),
and France (#5).
b) Since 2015, average SDG progress in the BRICS (Brazil, the Russian
Federation, India, China, and South Africa) and BRICS+ countries (Egypt,
Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) has outpaced the
world average.
3. Sustainable development remains a long-term investment challenge. Reforming the
global financial architecture is more urgent than ever.
4. Global challenges require global cooperation. Barbados ranks the highest in its
commitment to UN-based multilateralism; the United States ranks last.

 5. The SDG targets related to food and land systems are particularly off-track. The SDR
evaluates three possible pathways towards achieving sustainable food and land
systems.

Performance of India in SDG Index :

• Ranking: India secured 109th rank with the overall score of 64.0.
• Status of SDG Targets: Only around 30% of SDG targets are on track or have been
achieved.
• There is limited progress in the other 40% of the targets and in around 30% of targets
the situation is worsening.
• Average Performance of SDGs: Highest performance is observed in achieving SDG
1, SDG 4, SDG 12 and SDG 13.
