1. What are villi? What is their location and function?

Solution:
Villi are small finger-like projections from the walls of small intestine. It has
blood vessels. Villi are found to increase the surface area of small intestine for
absorption of digested food.

Structure of villi
2. Where is the bile produced? Which component of the food does it help to digest?
Solution:
The bile juice is secreted by the Liver and stored in the gall bladder. Bile plays an
important role in the digestion of fats. It breaks down the larger fat globules to
smaller fat globules (emulsification) and thus helps in breakdown of fats.
3. Name the type of carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but not by
humans. Give the reason also.
Solution:
The type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by human but can be digested by
ruminants is Cellulose. The ruminants have a large sac-like structure between
small and large intestine where the food containing cellulose is digested by the
action of certain bacteria. Humans cannot digest cellulose since the cellulose
digesting enzymes are absent in them.
4. Why do we get instant energy from glucose?
Solution:
Glucose is one of a simple sugar which gets easily absorbed in blood and thus
providing instant energy to us. Carbohydrates, when consumed, gets digested into
glucose in the process of digestion. Hence, when glucose is taken directly, it does
not have to be digested and therefore give us instant energy.
5. Which part of the digestive canal is involved in:
(i) Absorption of food ____.

(ii) Chewing of food ____.

(iii) Killing of bacteria ____.
(iv) Complete digestion of food ____.
iv) Formation of faeces ____.
Solution:
Small intestine
Buccal cavity (Teeth)
Stomach by hydrochloric acid
Small intestine
Large intestine
6. Write one similarity and one difference between the nutrition in Amoeba and
human being.
Solution:
One similarity
One similarity between nutrition in Amoeba and human beings is that both have
similar type of nutrition that is, both in case of amoeba and human beings, the
food is ingested, and process of digestion takes place wherein the complex food is
broken down to simpler form for easy assimilation in order to provide energy.
One difference
Human beings have a complex digestive system where in the food is ingested
through mouth and broken down by digestive juices in which different
components such as fats, carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins are digested by
different organs.
Whereas in amoeba, the digestive system is absent, and food is ingested through
pseudopodia. The food vacuole produces the digestive juices and the entire food
is digested within it.
7. Match the items of Column I with the items in Column II
Column I Column II
Salivary Gland Bile juice secretion
Stomach Storage of undigested food
Liver Saliva secretion
Rectum Acid release
Small intestine Digestion is completed
Large intestine Absorption of water

9. Can we survive only on raw, leafy vegetables/grass? Discuss.

Solution:
We humans cannot survive only on raw, leafy vegetables or grass since the grass
or leafy vegetables are rich in cellulose. The cellulose is a type of carbohydrate
which cannot be digested by us since the cellulose – digesting enzymes are
absent.
