b) Explain the procedure of estimation of electrical wiring of residential installation

with suitable example

In order to design a domestic (residential) installation, lighting and power sub circuits are
taken into consideration
A. Lighting circuit- Lighting circuit consists of light and fan points. Therefore, in 4 Marks
order to design a lighting circuit, following principles are used.
1. Each lighting sub circuit should not have more than a total 10 points including
lights, fans and 5 A socket outlets.
2. The load on each lighting sub circuit should not be more than 800 Watts

Therefore, total number of lighting sub circuit is given by

Total lighting sub circuit= Total lighting points / 10
OR
Total lighting sub circuit= Total lighting load / 800
B. Power Circuit- Power circuit consists of refrigerator, geyser and AC. Therefore, in
order to design a power circuit, following principles are used.
1. Each power sub circuit should not have more than a total 2 points of 15 A
socket outlets.
2. The load on each power sub circuit should not be more than 3000 Watts

Therefore, total number of power sub circuit is given by

Total power sub circuit= Total power points / 2
OR
Total power sub circuit= Total power load / 3000
Example for designing of residential unit installation:
A newly constructed residential unit is having following load
i) 3 lamp of 60 W
ii) 2 Ceiling fan of 60 W
iii) 2 Socket of 6 Amp having 200 W
iv) 1 Socket of 16 Amp having 1 kW

Calculate:
1) Total Light load
2) Total Power load
3) Number of sub circuits
Given data:
i) 3 lamp of 60 W
ii) 2 Ceiling fan of 60 W
iii) 2 Socket of 6 Amp having 200 W
iv) 1 Socket of 16 Amp having 1 kW
Assume: Single phase AC supply voltage is 230 V

1) Total Light load

= (3 x 60) + (2 x 60) + (2 x 200)
= 180 + 120 + 400
= 700 W
2) Total Power load
= 1 x 1000
= 1000 W
3) Number of sub circuits
Total connected load = Total light load + Total power load
= 700 + 1000
= 1700 W
Therefore, number of sub circuits required = Total connected load / 800
= 1700 / 800
= 2.125
(Students may explain / write alternate suitable example )

c) A residential unit is newly constructed having following load

i) 7 lamp of 30 W
ii) 5 Ceiling fan of 65 W
iii) 5 Socket of 6 Amp having 200 W
iv) 1 Socket of 16 Amp having 2 kW
Calculate: 4 Mark
1) Total light load (1 mark
= (7 x 30) + (5 x 65) + (5 x 200) for each)
= 210 + 325 + 1000
= 1535 W OR 1.535 kW
2) Total power load
= (1 x 2000)
= 2000 W OR 2 kW
3) Size of conductor
Total connected load = Total light load + Total power load
= 1535 + 2000
= 3535 W OR 3.535 kW
Load Current in Ampere = Total connected load / Supply voltage

= 3535 / 230 XXXXX
(Assume Supply Voltage = 230 V)
= 15.36 Ampere
As, the value of load current is 15.36 Ampere, following rating / size of conductors
are selected.
1. Copper conductor cable of 7/0.737 mm having current carrying capacity of 20
ampere is selected.
2. Aluminium conductor cable of 1/2.24 mm having current carrying capacity of 20
ampere is selected.
4) Number of sub circuit
4.1 Total lighting sub circuit = Total lighting load / 800
= 1535 / 800
= 1.918
=2
4.2 Total power sub circuit = Total power load / 3000
= 2000 / 3000
= 0.666
=1
Therefore, Number of sub circuit = lighting sub circuit + power sub circuit
=2+1
=3

b) b) Estimate the mash material required for a 750 m, 415/240 V three phase line with four
wire in vertical configuration. The line emanate from substation to feed a load of 30 kW.
Take the span between two poles as 50 m. The size of conductor is ACSR 6/1 x 2.599 mp. 06 Marks
Plan of overhead line is in Figure No. 3.

1) Poles: Pre-stressed Concrete (PSC / PCC) Poles (8 m) = 15nos.

2) Conductor: ACSR conductor (6/1 x 2.59 mm) is usually used for LT lines. The length of
conductor required = 4 conductors/line x Line length + 5% for sag and wastage
= 4*750*105/100=3150mm =3.15km
3) GI wire for earthwire: usually 8 SWG GI wire is used. Length of GI wire required =
GI wire of 8 SWG weighs 0.131kg/m, hence the required GI wire =750*105/100
=787.5*0.131kg/mm =103.63kg
4) LT shackle Insulators: These are required 4 nos. per pole ;Total shackle insulators required
= 15*4=60nos
5) Earth knobs: It is required one per pole for carrying earth wire, Total earth knob
requirement = 15 nos.
6) D-clamps for Shackle insulators: It is required for each shackle insulator. No. of D-clamps
required =60 nos.
7) Guysets: It is required one for each end pole and two for the pole at cut-points (Cut-point
pole usually marked after five spans). Here since the no. of poles are 15, we can make only
one cut-point at sixth pole. So the no. of guysets required = 1+1+1 = 3 nos.
8) Earthing sets: Every fifth LT pole is to be earthed. The end poles are also earthed. So the
total requirement of earthing sets = 3

b) i) Explain the characteristic of - XXXXX
(1) Incandescent lamp : Incandescent lamps produce light by heating a tungsten filament,
emitting a warm-colored glow. They are inefficient, have a short lifespan, and are being
phased out in favor of more energy-efficient options like LED bulbs.

(2) Florescent lamp: Fluorescent lamps use mercury vapor to produce ultraviolet light,
converted to visible light by phosphor coatings. They're energy-efficient, longer-lasting
than incandescent, but require proper disposal due to mercury content. 3 mark

yellow-orange light, are energy-efficient with a long lifespan, but have a warm-up time
and lower color rendering. They require a ballast for operation and may experience lumen
depreciation over time. Proper disposal is important due to environmental.

II) State the objectives of outdoor (Exterior) lighting

The primary objective of outdoor lighting encompasses a multifaceted approach, aiming to

fulfill various functional and aesthetic purposes. Firstly, outdoor lighting serves as a
crucial element in enhancing visibility during nighttime, allowing individuals to navigate 3 Mark
and use outdoor spaces effectively. This is particularly essential for pathways, driveways,
and entrances, where adequate illumination contributes to safety and minimizes potential
hazards.
Beyond mere functionality, outdoor lighting also plays a pivotal role in bolstering security
measures. Well-designed lighting can deter trespassers and intruders, creating a more
secure environment for homes, businesses, and public spaces. Strategic placement of
lights, such as near entrances and around the perimeter, contributes to a heightened sense
of safety.
Furthermore, outdoor lighting is a powerful tool for accentuating the architectural and
landscape features of a property. Thoughtful placement of lights can highlight key
elements, adding an aesthetic dimension to the outdoor environment. This not only
enhances the overall visual appeal but also creates a welcoming ambiance for residents and
visitors alike.

Objective of outdoor lighting are visibility, safety, security, and aesthetics, working
synergistically to optimize the functionality and appeal of outdoor spaces.
