At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
a.) identify the organs that make up the digestive system;
b.) give the function of each organ;
c.) describe how some accessory organs and glands help the
body in the digestive process.

EXPLAIN (Teach the concept)

Digestive System is one of the most


essential systems in the human body,
responsible for breaking down food,
absorbing nutrients, and eliminating
waste. However, it does not function in
isolation. It collaborates with various
other systems to ensure that the body
receives the energy and nutrients
needed for optimal functioning.

The digestive system includes a series of organs that work


together to convert food into energy and nutrients that the body
can use.

The major components of the digestive system are:


• Mouth: Begins the process
of digestion by mechanically
breaking down food through
chewing.
• Esophagus: Transports
food from the mouth to the
stomach.
• Stomach: Uses acids and
enzymes to break down
food into a semi-liquid form
known as chyme.
• Small Intestine: Absorbs nutrients from the chyme into
the bloodstream.
• Large Intestine: Absorbs water and forms waste for
elimination.
• Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas: Assist in digestion
by producing bile and digestive enzymes.
Accessory organs and glands play a crucial role in the
digestive process by producing and secreting enzymes,
hormones, and other substances that aid in breaking down
food.

These organs do not directly come in contact with food


but assist in digestion in the following ways:

1. Salivary Glands – These glands (parotid,


submandibular, and sublingual) secrete saliva, which
contains the enzyme amylase that begins the
breakdown of carbohydrates in the mouth. Saliva also
moistens food, making it easier to swallow.
2. Liver – The liver produces bile, a digestive fluid that
helps break down fats into smaller droplets through
emulsification, making it easier for enzymes to digest
them. Bile is stored in the gallbladder until needed.
3. Gallbladder – This small organ stores and releases
bile into the small intestine (duodenum) when fatty
foods are present. It aids in the efficient digestion and
absorption of fats.
4. Pancreas – The pancreas produces digestive
enzymes (amylase, lipase, and proteases) that break
down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It also
releases bicarbonate, which neutralizes stomach acid
before food enters the small intestine, protecting the
intestinal lining and allowing enzymes to work
effectively.
