PEC Tutorial 2
1. A single phase converter feeds an R-L load having a resistance of 10 Ω in series with an
inductance of 20 mH. The converter operates such that the dc voltage across the load is 250
V. The thyristor used in the converter has latching current of 300 mA and a delay time of 5
µs. Determine the pulse width of gate current. [29µs]
2. For an SCR, the gate-cathode characteristic is given by a straight line with a gradient of 20
volts per ampere passing through origin. The maximum turn-on time is 4 µs and the
minimum gate current required to quick turn-on is 400 mA. If the gate source voltage is 15 V,
calculate the resistance to be connected in series and the gate-power dissipation. [17.5Ω,
3.2W]
Given that pulse width is equal to the turn-on time and the average power dissipation
is 0.2 W, compute the maximum triggering frequency that will be possible when pulse firing
is used. [15.6 kHz]
3. SCRs with a rating of 1000 V and 200 A are available to be used in a string to handle 6 kV
and 1 kA. Calculate the number of series and parallel units required in case derating factor is
(a) 0.1 and (b) 0.2 [(a) ns=7, np=6, (b) ns=8, np=7]
4. A thyristor data sheet gives 1.5 V and 100 mA as the minimum value of gate-trigger voltage
and gate-trigger current respectively. A resistor of 20 Ω is connected across gate-cathode
terminals. For a trigger supply voltage of 8 V, compute the value of resistance that should be
connected in series with gate circuit in order to ensure turn-on of the device. [37.14Ω]
5. A thyristor is triggered by a train of pulses of frequency 4 kHz and of duty cycle 0.2.
Calculate the pulse width. In case average gate power dissipation is 1 W, find the maximum
allowable gate power drive. [50µs, 5W]
6. A thyristor is placed between a constant dc voltage source of 240 V and resistive load R.The
specified limits for di/dt and dv/dt for the SCR are 60 A/microsecond and 300 V/microsecond
respectively. Determine the values of the di/dt inductor and the snubber circuit parameters.
Take damping ratio as 0.5. [4µH, 5Ω, 0.16µF]
Discuss how these parameters may be modified to suit the working conditions in the circuit.
Derive the various expressions used.
7. R, L and C in an SCR circuit meant for protecting against dv/dt and di/dt are 4 Ω, 6 µHand 6
µF respectively. If the supply voltage to the circuit is 300 V, calculate permissible maximum

Take a factor of safety of 2 for the three specifications mentioned above. Design a suitable
snubber circuit if the minimum load resistance is 20 Ω. Take ξ= 0.65. [16.7µH, 6Ω, 0.78µF]
9. A unijunction transistor, used in relaxation oscillator, has the following data:
η =0.67, Iv=10 mA, Vv = 2.5 V, Ip = 15 µA.
An oscillator, with an oscillation frequency of 1 kHz, is to be designed by using this
UJT. Compute the values of charging resistor and external resistors needed in the base
circuits. Take C = 0.4 µFand forward-voltage drop of E –B1 junction as 0.5 V. Source voltage
is 24 V dc and triggering pulse width is 50 µs. [R=2.35kΩ, R1=125Ω, R2=621.9Ω,
Rmax=495kΩ, Rmin=2.15kΩ
10. A relaxation oscillator, using-an UJT, is to be designed for triggering an SCR. The UJT has
the following data:
η =0.7, Ip =0.5 mA, Vp=15.0 V, Vv=0.8 V, Iv=2 mA, RBB=6 kΩ.
Normal leakage current with emitter open = 3 mA.
a) The firing frequency is 1.5 kHz. For C = 0.05 µF, compute the values of charging resistor
and the external resistors connected in the base circuits. Take forward-voltage drop of E-
B1 junction as zero. [R=11.074kΩ, R1= 476.2Ω, R2=666.7Ω]
b) If the frequency of firing the SCR in part (a)is changed by varying charging resistor R,
obtain the maximum and minimum values of Rand the corresponding frequencies.
[Rmax=12.85kΩ, Rmin=10.3kΩ, fmin=1.29kHz, fmax=1.611kHz]
11. The intrinsic stand-off ratio for an UJT is 0.65. Its interbase resistance is 10 kΩ. Estimate the
minimum and maximum values of charging resistor in the UJT oscillator circuit for manual
trigger-angle control of a between 20° and 160° for 50 Hz supply. Assume C = 0.4 µF and η
=0.7. [2.3kΩ, 18.4kΩ]
