We should also not be proud of our prowess and try to help each other and establish a bond of love
with each other rather than indulging in hate.
Theme/Moral of the lesson: The story focuses mainly on friendship. We see that Ranji and Suraj,
though adversaries, understand each other's skills. They give up their hatred towards one another and
at the end become friends. The author has also tried to touch upon the theme of bullying in this story.
It conveys the moral o that fighting is not beneficial and that people should instead help each other and
establish love.
Question and Answers:

1. In what way is the forest pool different from the one which Ranji knew in the Rajputana desert?

Answer: In the Rajputana desert, the pools were sticky and muddy where women washed clothes or
buffaloes wallowed. But the forest pool was clean, cold and inviting, with a gentle translucency. So
Ranji leapt into the water for swimming.

2.How does Ranji feel when he first encounters the pool in the forest?

Answer: Ranji feels a sense of relief and excitement when he finds the pool in the forest. He is tired
from the hot weather and, seeing the cool, clear water, he immediately jumps in to refresh himself. He
has never encountered such a clean and inviting pool before.

3. What was Ranji's response when Suraj challenged him to fight again the next day?

Answer: Although Ranji felt weak and sore from the previous day’s fight, he did not back down. He
decided to face Suraj again, as he believed not showing up would mean admitting defeat. He was
determined to fight for his right to the pool.

4. Why do you think Suraj felt the need to challenge Ranji to a fight in the first place?

Answer: Suraj likely felt insecure about Ranji’s presence at the pool, viewing it as his territory. His
challenge to fight could have been motivated by a need to assert dominance and prove his strength.
The challenge was an expression of his pride and desire for control over the pool.

5. What does the final agreement between Ranji and Suraj about the pool reveal about their
relationship?

Answer: The final agreement shows that both Ranji and Suraj have developed mutual respect and
understanding. After their fight, they realize that cooperation is better than conflict. Their shared
ownership of the pool symbolizes the beginning of a friendship, with each valuing the other's
strengths.
