Section 1: Comprehension.
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

Karisa was on his way to the shop. He knew what he was supposed to buy: a loaf of
bread and a packet of milk for the family’s breakfast, a newspaper for his father and a piece
of bar soap. As usual, he was aware of his ‘share’, the five shillings balance that would
remain after the shopping. He would use it to buy a sweet and eat it on his way back. This is
one reason why he always voluntered to go while his siblings remained in the comfort of
watching the television.

He was a focused boy who rarely allowed anything to interrupt him. In a short
while, he was at the shop. He presented his shopping list and the two-hundred
shilling note. Musa, the shopkeeper, never wasted time with him. He quickly packed
Karisa’s items in a shopping bag and passed them to him but there was no balance!

Karisa remained standing, waiting for Musa to either give him the balance or the
sweets but neither was forthcoming. Musa kept serving others as if he didn’t exist. He
therefore gathered courage to ask for it.

Musa smiled back at him and told him that there was no balance. The price of fuel
had gone up the previous week and caused the prices of a number of commodities to go
up. Disappointed but satisfied, Karisa left the shop and rushed back home.

Read the following comprehension and answer the questions that follow.

Once upon a time, the animals lived together. They hunted together and only went separate ways to
sleep. All animals were happy with one another except for the Hare who rarely did what was expected of
him. When others joined hands to go hunting together, he would disappear, climb up a tall tree and
watch as the others shared the food. Later, he would go to the home of one of them, steal the food, eat it
and take the rest to his family. This way, he rarely lacked food but for sure, he never worked for it.

One day, Tortoise complained that he had lost his food. Before he could be responded to, Pig had said
he too had lost his share the previous week. All the others felt disturbed at the turn of events and they asked
monkey to stay a top the huge tree to help them get the thief. Hare suggested that he could help patrol on
the ground to ensure both the ground and up the trees were monitored. The suggestion was accepted by all.

The following day, the animals left for hunting as normal. Monkey was up the trees when he saw the
others make a kill. He whistled to Hare who reported to him immediately. Once the report was given,

Hare climbed up the tree and joined him. The two of them watched as the animals shared out
the meat, leaving two pieces to be delivered to the two of them.

This trend continued for weeks and the others were happy that the mistrust and stealing
among them had come to an end. Both Monkey and Hare were congratulated for a job well -done.

Read the passage below and do as instructed

Most of us take three meals in a day; breakfast, lunch and supper. At times, we take tea at ten o’clock
and another between four and five o’clock in theevening. In between the meals, we could take some
snacks.

It is not easy to find one turning away something like doughnuts, groundnuts or a piece of cake.
Simply put, depending on the availability of food, we can eat and keep eating unless we are stopped. But
why do we keep eating continously?

FOR MARKING SCHEME CALL SIR ABRAHAM 0729 125 181

The body has a mechanism that controls the eating. There are some types of food that get digested faster
than others. If you eat chapati, for example, it takes quite sometime before it is fully digested and passed out as
waste. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, go through the system much faster. This explains why at times, you
eat and go hungry soon after a while. Some types of food keep you satisfied much longer. Fruits and boiled
roots are good as they clear the system but you should expect to eat soon after eating them. Remember, it is
not about the quantity of food you eat but the food nutrients contained in them.

When one finds the kind of food they like eating, there’s a temptation to eat more than necessary. As he
sits down belching and probably feeling great, the body, especially the digestive system, feels overwhelmed.

This is why the person is likely to feel drowsy and tired. Unfortunately, majority of such food is
usually passed out as waste because of being rejected at the digestion stage.

It is common to hear people complain about ulcers, stomach ulcers, stomach upset and many more
such diseases after attending a party. Do they remember they are the cause of their own problems?

LITERATURE AND POETRY. 3 (15mks)

Read the story below and then answer questions that follow.

Hyena and Hare were once friends. They lived close to each other and hunted together. However,
neither ever visited the other. This could be because they had young ones to take care of whenever they
were not hunting.

For some days, Hare did not accompany her friend to go hunting and Hyena wondered silently how her
friend was managing to feed her young ones. One day, she decided to follow Hare closely to find out where
Hare got her food. Not aware she was being followed, Hare went to visit her sick friend, Lion. She had got a
simpler way of getting food without running after others. She would trick them one by one that

Lion wanted to see them with a view of making them the next king. The moment the unsuspecting
animal went in, Lion would pounce on it and kill it. Hare would prepare some of the meat for Lion and carry
the rest to her home. She would throw the bones away and this is what annoyed Hyena.

When Hyena confronted Hare on what she had found out, Hare denied. Hyena then decided to approach
Lion when Hare was away.

“Our able king, I’m sorry you have suffered so much yet Hare’s grandmother is a magician. She should
have brought you medicine long ago,” she said. Later, Hare came and was almost killed by the furious Lion.
She pleaded, “Our able king, my grandmother said that the medicine for your ailment is in the two short
legs of a hyena. I didn’t want to tell you this because she’s my friend.”

“Tell her to visit me tommorow,” roared Lion. Hyena went visiting but she didn’t stand a chance
of escape. Lion grabbed her and she was eaten shortly after.

man, Laugh and be merry: remember, in olden time,

God made Heaven and Earth for joy, He took time in a rhyme,

Made them, and filled them with the strong red wine of His mirth,

The splendid joy of the stars; the joy of the earth.

So we must laugh and drink from the deep blue cup of the sky,
Join the jubilant song of the great stars sweeping by,

Laugh, and battle, and work, and drink of the wine

outpoured In the dear green earth, the sign of the joy of the
Lord. Laugh and be merry together, like brothers akin,
Guesting a while in the rooms of a beautiful inn,

Glad till the dancing stops, and the lilt of the music end.

TASK 6: CLASS READERS

Read the excerpt below and then answer the questions that follow.

We had just been looking for Jimi for two or three minutes but to us it looked as if we had taken more
than an hour. This is because he had just disappeared from us and Mika frightened us so much; it had been
rumoured that there were big ogres that roamed the forest. They were so big that they could swallow a
whole cow. Now, you can see why our fear was compounded and wherever we shouted his name, the
response was the echo from the adjacent hill. Time too was moving faster than we had anticipated; the
sun was slowly sinking below the horizon.

“Now, we have landed in a bigger problem; we should not have come here in the first place,” Festo
said. “But it was your idea, Festo,” I reminded him. “Yes but I didn’t expect this. What shall we do?” he
asked.

Then we heard the rustling of leaves and instantly turned our heads in that direction.
Clutching a number of ripe guavas was Jimi! All his pockets were bulging with the fruits too
but more interesting was his mouth - no wonder he could not respond to our calls.

Ikiwa sote tutakuwa waajiriwa naye mwajiri atakuwa nani?

vijana, wake kwa waume, hukata tamaa, yaani kupoteza matumaini mafanikio yao yanapokawia. Wengine

Darasa lake sasa lilikuwa

yale yaliyomkumba likizoni. Aliamua kutia komango masikioni ili gubu zao
zisiathiri bidii yake masomoni.

Siku moja wakiwa shuleni, Kijungwe alimtania, “Tumaini, hivi uliikimbia tohara

wembe?” Kijungwe aliendelea kukejeli.

Huku akiwa ameghadhabika, Tumaini alimrushia Kijungwe jiwe ambalo aliliepa. Jiwe
lilifululiza moja kwa moja likampata mwalimu kichwani. Mwalimu huyo aliyekuwa
alilorusha.
“Jiwe lile kalirusha nani?” Mwalimu alimwuliza Tumaini.
“Kijungwe,” Tumaini alimjibu bila kicho.

Mwalimu hakutaka kuzisikia kelele za Kijungwe za kujitetea. Aliyaelewa machachari

aking’oa visiki hadi jioni. Tangu wakati huo, Kijungwe alikoma kumkejeli Tumaini.
