This assignment is an individual assignment and must be completed independently. Each question is
worth 5 marks. A maximum of 15 marks can be achieved for a total of 15% of your overall course mark.

1. With the multiple tasks to be completed by you as a support worker in a long-term care
facility:
a. Who do you report to? (1 mark)

Answer- PSW report to a nurse. This can be a registered nurse (RN), registered practical
nurse (RPN), or licensed practical nurse (LPN) depending on the facility's staffing policies.
Support workers assist clients with various activities of daily living (ADLs) and provide
personal care, making important contributions to the clients' care plans.

b. List some of the specific issues and challenges you will face working in this
environment. (2 marks)

Answer-

 Meeting multiple needs of residents simultaneously.


 Working closely with a team and dealing with potential
conflicts.
 Working in a structured environment that demands strong
organizational skills.
 Managing time effectively to address the needs of many
people.
 Dealing with frail older persons or those with severe chronic
health issues

c. Explain your answers (2 marks)


 Meeting multiple needs: Support workers in long-term care facilities often have to attend to
many residents, each with unique needs and health issues. This needs good judgment to
prioritize and manage tasks efficiently.
 Working closely with a team: Collaboration with a team of healthcare professionals,
including nurses and therapists, is important. Effective communication and conflict resolution
skills are necessary to maintain a collaborative working environment.
 Structured environment: Long-term care facilities have structured routines to help
residents, particularly those with conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Support workers will
have to adapt to and work within these routines while being sensitive to the residents' needs.

2. You are working in a long-term care facility as a support worker. You have two young
children and an ailing parent to look after at home. You are now starting to show signs of
burnout.
a. What are some of the signs and symptoms of burnout? (2 marks)

Answer- Burnout can happen in various ways. Some signs and symptoms include:

 Physical Signs: Fatigue, insomnia, changes in appetite


 Emotional Signs: Increased irritability, loss of motivation, feelings of helplessness
 Behavioral Signs: Increased absenteeism, procrastination, decreased performance.
b. What are your obligations to your employer and why? (1 mark)

Answer- As a support worker Inform Employer: It is important to communicate with


employer if we are experiencing burnout.
c. What are four strategies you can use to manage stress? (2 marks)
 Develop Self-Awareness: Recognize what causes our stress
 Take Care of Your Needs: Ensure we get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and follow a
nutritious diet.
 Think Positively: Focus on what can control and try to view stressors in a positive light.
 Assert Yourself: Learn to say "no" to additional tasks when we are already
overwhelmed,

3. Currently, the Canadian health care system is facing challenges.


a. List and describe in your own words 5 of these challenges (5 marks)
Answer)-
1) Worker Shortages: There is a big shortage of healthcare workers, particularly in rural and
remote areas. This shortage effects the quality and accessibility of care, as there are not
enough professionals to meet the needs of the population.
2) Aging Population: The baby boomer generation is aging, leading to an increase in the
demand for healthcare services. This demographic shift puts a strain on healthcare
resources.
3) Long Waiting Lists: Many Canadians experience long waiting times for surgeries, diagnostic
tests, and medical procedures. These delays can lead to worsening health conditions and
increased stress for patients waiting for care.
4) Aging Workforce: The healthcare workforce is also aging, leading to a higher incidence of
injuries among older workers and a reduced capacity to deliver care.

5) Geographic Disparities: Access to health care services can vary significantly between
urban and rural areas. Those in remote or rural locations often face challenges in
