The document outlines calculations related to the stability of a concrete gravity dam, including maximum vertical stresses at the heel and toe, stability checks, major principal stresses, and shear stress intensity. It provides specific numerical values for forces acting on the dam, including weight, uplift pressures, and horizontal forces. The results indicate that the dam is stable under the given conditions, with stresses below allowable limits.

Q. The figure shows the section of the gravity dam made of concrete.

(i) Calculate the maximum vertical stresses at the heel and toe of the dam.

(ii) Check whether the dam is stable or not.

(iii) The major principle stresses at the toe of the dam.

(iv) The intensity of shear stress on a horizontal plane near the toe.

Assume the unit weight of concrete =23.5 kN/m3 , and unit length of the dam.
Allowable stress in concrete is taken as 2500 kN/m2 . Neglect earthquake forces.

(i) check for overturning =

(ii) Compression Pmax at toe

Pmax at toe kN/m2) < 3000 kN/m2 , hence ok

(iii) check for tension

Pmin at toe kN/m2) < 500 kN/m2 , hence ok

(-) sign indicates that tension occurred but this value is less than permissible
value = 500 kN/m2
