1. Introduction to HRM
Human Resource Management (HRM) is an operation in companies designed to
maximize employee performance in order to meet the employer's strategic goals
and objectives. More precisely, HRM focuses on management of people within
companies, emphasizing on policies and systems.
Class exercise: What is HRM and why is it important for a business?

2. Business Characteristics and Vision


 The most common features of business organizations are; structure,
processes, relationships, authority and responsibility, performance and
behaviour of individuals and groups.
 A vision is a vivid mental image of what you want your business to be at some
point in the future, based on your goals and aspirations. ... A vision statement
captures, in writing, the essence of where you want to take your business,
and can inspire you and your staff to reach your goals.
Class exercise: Name and describe three business characteristics and their importance in
HRM.

3. Job Descriptions
A job description is an internal document that clearly states the essential job
requirements, job duties, job responsibilities, and skills required to perform a specific
role.
Class exercise: Choose a specific job position in the hospitality industry (ex. Waiter) and
create a Job Description for this position.
4. Business Operation Manual
The operations manual is the documentation by which an organisation provides
guidance for members and employees to perform their functions correctly and
reasonably efficiently. It documents the approved standard procedures for
performing operations safely to produce goods and provide services.
Class exercise: Describe in your own words what a Business Operation Manual is and why
do you think it’s important for business.

5. Job Adverts
A job advertisement is a print or electronic notification of an intent to hire someone
to perform specific work in a position at a company or organization.
Class exercise: Choose a specific job position (ex. Receptionist) and create a Job Advert in
order to attract the best possible candidates.

Recruitment, Selection & Orientation. Recruitment and Selection refers to the
process of attracting, screening, and selecting qualified people for a position while
incorporating employment equity principles and practices.

8. Training, Assessment and Development


A training needs assessment identifies individuals' current level of competency, skill
or knowledge in one or more areas and compares that competency level to the
required competency standard established for their positions or other positions
within the organization.
Class exercise: One of your employees in the kitchen (cook) is having difficulties to
perform. Create a training plan to help this person perform better.
9. Human resource management

the greater framework of a team, which is a group of interdependent individuals
who work together towards a common goal.
Class exercise: Describe in your own words why teamwork is important.

11. Organizational behaviour and Human Psychology


 The study of both group and individual performance and activity within an
organization. This area of study examines human behaviour in a work
environment and determines its impact on job structure, performance,
communication, motivation, leadership, etc.
 Human Psychology is the science of mind and human behaviour. The general
definition may refer to the profession, also referred to as clinical psychology;
the scholarly discipline, referred to as academic psychology or educational
psychology; or the scientific pursuit, research psychology.
Class exercise: Describe the individual activity and performance of a particular position (ex
ex. Housekeeping in the hospitality industry.

12. Health and Safety in the workplace


Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) is the discipline concerned with protecting the
health and safety of all stakeholders in the workplace from exposure to hazards and
risks resulting from work activities.
Class exercise: Describe in your own words what HACCP is

13. Operations management


The administration of business practices to create the highest level of efficiency
possible within an organization. It is concerned with converting materials and labour
into goods and services as efficiently as possible to maximize the profit of an
organization.
Class exercise: Choose a particular job role (ex. Cook) and explain how this person can
perform efficiently to the highest possible level.

14. Employment Law


Labour law mediates the relationship between workers, employing entities, trade
unions and the government. Collective labour law relates to the tripartite
relationship between employee, employer and union. Individual labour law concerns
employees' rights at work also through the contract for work.
Class exercise: Describe in your own words what employment law is and explain why this
is important.

15. Strategic management


The ongoing planning, monitoring, analysis and assessment of all that is necessary
for an organization to meet its goals and objectives. Changes in the business
environment require organizations to constantly assess their strategies for success.
Class exercise: Write a brief strategy for an imaginary hospitality business of your choice.
