a) Paradox, irony, hyperbole

b) Allusion, ekphrasis, allegory

c) Metonymy, alliteration, enjambment

d) Personification, motif, foreshadowing

e) Imagery, symbolism, soliloquy

You may review this list of literary devices as well; it is even more inclusive than the handout I

have provided.

Provide both a definition and example for each device. Instead of copying and pasting a Google

definition, in your own words try your best to rewrite it. Meanwhile, the example of the device

you select could be found in a text, a poem, in a song, in an image, in a video clip, etc. If you

want to create your own example, you may. However, you will want to ensure it is actually

accurate.

Example:

A: Paradox, Irony, Hyperbole Diego Calleja

A Diego Calleja

Paradox is a statement that is illogical and is usually used when opposing forces are

directed at each other. An example of a Paradox is the movie Looper, This movie starts off

with the main character trying to kill a certain person and at the end of the movie turns out

the the person he has been trying to kill the whole movie is himself but from the future.

Irony is what something seems to be versus what it seems like in reality. A good example of

irony is Mulan. The movie is about a girl taking revenge and dressing up as a man to be in

the army. In the army perspective she is like any other man but the reality is that she is

hiding from the army about their truth. Hyperbole is when something is super exaggerated

compared to the truth. An example of this is when in the movie Elf the main character says

“This is the world's best coffee” The truth is that it was good coffee and was exaggerated

about being the world's best coffee.

A II Yamato Yukimoto

Paradox definition: A paradox is a statement that is unreasonably opposite of a logical

answer.

Paradox Example: By taking down the offer from the big company John built his

successful empire of fart collection.

Irony definition: Irony is when someone expresses their feelings in a way that usually

means the opposite of what the statement usually means.

Irony Example: Telling a rude customer “have a nice day”

Hyperbole definition: the definition of a hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration of a

statement.

Hyperbole example: My feet are killing me.

B. Sammy Paul

An allusion is a reference to another thing like a text involving a person, thing, or

action. An example is saying “your my kryptonite” to a girl, referring to how she is their

weekness.

Ekphrasis means a type of description either literary or something else on a

workpiece or art. An example is when Achilles’ shield was described by Homer.

Allegory means symbols, words, or pictures that hold a hidden meaning that can be

revealed. An example of an allegory is in Avatar where its imperialist opression where the

environment and cultures are destryoyed.

C. Clifford Roberts
A Metonymy is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is referred to by the name of

something closely associated with that thing or concept. one example would be if someone

referred to a royal person as the crown, like “we swear loyalty to the crown is a metonymy.

C. Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or

closely connected words, one example of alliteration would be “Quick Question, this is

alliteration because its a phrase that has the same letter in both words.

C. enjambment is the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line.

one example would be, when a poem is read a reader will ake a slight pause.

D. Leana Moore

Personification: Giving human characteristics to objects (ex: “The sun smiled at me.”)

Motif: An image, sound, word or symbol of significance that keeps reappearing in the

story. (ex: in the Great Gatsby one motif is wealth and finance (the corruption of the

American Dream.)

Foreshadowing: A warning or indication of a future event. (ex: There is foreshadowing in

the Great Gatsby when the narrator said “Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what

preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams”.)

E. Cielo Taylor

Imagery: Figurative language that is meant to create a mental image by being visually

descriptive. (ex: “The night was black as ever with tiny stars sprinkled across the sky”)

Symbolism: Marks, signs or symbols that are meant to represent ideas, objects, or

relationships. (ex: 4 leaf clovers are meant to represent good luck)

Soliloquy: When a character says their thoughts out loud without addressing another. This

might usually be used in plays/ acts to make a character's thoughts be known to the

audience (ex: in William Shakespeare's Hamlet, when Hamlet asks, “To be or not to be?”,

he is speaking to himself)

Your grade will be determined by the accuracy of the definitions you wrote and the examples

provided.
