Design Details
FINISHED SIZE stitch guide
18” [46 cm] finished circumference (unstretched),
9.25” [23.5 cm] finished height (brim folded). 2x2 Rib (mult of 4)
All rnds: *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Yarn
Hudson + West Co. Weld (70% U.S. Merino / 30%
U.S. Corriedale; 200 yds [215 m]; 3.5 oz. [100 g]):
barn red (deep red), 1 skein.

Needles
Size A: US 2.5 [3 mm] 16” [40 cm] circs and
double-pointed needles (dpn), or a long needle for
magic loop, per knitter preference.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct
gauge.

Notions
Stitch marker; tapestry needle; (optional) H+W
foldover leather label, thread and sharp sewing nee-
dle.

Gauge
30 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10 cm] in 2x2 Rib (un-
stretched) using Size A needle.

Skills Required
circular knitting; decreases; (optional) Old Norwe-
gian or German Twisted Cast On.

Construction Notes
• Hat is worked in the round from the bottom up.
• Uses the stretchy Old Norwegian Cast On or
German Twisted Cast On.

About the Design


A simple, lightweight, 2x2 ribbed beanie for ev-
eryone! Red Wing is a crowd-pleasing, one-size-
fits-all, stretchy beanie that works as a slouch or
watchcap (shown). Finish the look with a new
reversible Hudson + West Co. leather label!

Our photographer loved this hat so much that it now


has a permanent home on his head!

Instructions
HAt
Using Size A needle and the Old Norwegian Cast
On or preferred stretchy cast on method, CO 132
sts. Pm for BOR and join in the round, being care-
ful not to twist.

Work in 2x2 Rib (see Stitch Guide) until piece mea-


sures 8” [20.25 cm] from CO.

Shape Crown:
Rnd 1: *k2tog, work in patt for 29 sts, ssk, pm; rep
from * 2 more times, then k2tog, work in patt for
29 sts, ssk — 8 sts dec’d; 124 sts on needle.
Rnd 2: k1, work in patt to m, k1, sm; rep from *
to end.
Rnd 3: k2tog, work in established patt to 2 sts be-
fore m, ssk; rep from * rep from * to end of rnd — 8
sts dec’d; 116 sts on needle.

Rep Rnds 2-3 six more times — 48 sts dec’d; 68 sts


on needle. Then rep Rnd 3 six more times — 48 sts
dec’d; 20 sts on needle.

Last Rnd: *k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd — 10 sts


dec’d; 10 sts on needle.

Break yarn leaving a leaving an 8 - 10” [20 - 25 cm]


tail. Using tapestry needle, thread tail and draw
through remaining sts. Pull shut and secure inside
hat.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Wet block to final measurements.


(Optional): Using H+W foldover label, sharp nee-
dle and thread, attach the label to the brim of hat.
