Chapter: Laws of Motion

Maximum Marks: 80
Time: 3 Hours

Answer all the questions. Marks are indicated against each question.

Section A: Very Short Answer Questions (1 Mark Each)

1. State Newton's first law of motion.

2. Define inertia and give one example.

3. What is the SI unit of force?

4. Write the relation between mass and weight.

5. What is the angle of friction?

Section B: Short Answer Questions - I (2 Marks Each)

6. Explain the concept of equilibrium with an example.

7. State and explain the law of conservation of momentum.

8. A force of 10 N is applied to a body of mass 2 kg. Find its acceleration.

9. Differentiate between static and kinetic friction.

10. Explain the concept of limiting friction.

Section C: Short Answer Questions - II (3 Marks Each)

11. A block of mass 5 kg is placed on a rough horizontal surface. If the coefficient of friction is 0.4, calculate

12. Derive the expression for centripetal force.

13. Explain why passengers fall forward when a moving bus stops suddenly.

14. What is the motion of a body if the net external force acting on it is zero? Explain.

15. Describe the advantages of using lubricants to reduce friction.

Section D: Long Answer Questions (5 Marks Each)

16. State and prove Newton's second law of motion.

17. Derive an expression for the acceleration of a body sliding down an inclined plane.

18. A 50 kg person stands on a weighing machine in an elevator. Calculate the reading of the

machine when:

(a) The elevator moves upwards with an acceleration of 2 m/s².

(b) The elevator moves downwards with an acceleration of 2 m/s².

(c) The elevator is at rest.

19. Derive the expression for the motion of two blocks connected by a string over a smooth pulley.

20. Explain the working of a rocket based on the third law of motion.

Section E: Numerical Problems (6 Marks Each)

21. A bullet of mass 50 g is fired from a gun of mass 10 kg with a velocity of 400 m/s. Calculate the

recoil velocity of the gun.

22. A block of 20 kg is placed on a rough horizontal surface with a coefficient of friction 0.5. A

horizontal force of 150 N is applied. Will the block move? Justify your answer with calculations.

23. Two blocks of masses 3 kg and 5 kg are connected by a light string passing over a frictionless

pulley. Find the acceleration of the system and the tension in the string.
