Tandem Lifting Work Procedure

1. Planning and Risk Assessment:

o Conduct a thorough risk assessment before starting the lift.
o Determine the weight and centre of gravity of the load.
o Ensure that both cranes or lifting devices are suitable for the load's weight and size.
2. Personnel and Equipment Requirements:
o Identify and assign a qualified crane operator for each faran/crane.
o Designate a signal person to direct the lift.
o Ensure both farana/cranes have proper lifting slings, hooks, and lifting attachments.
o Use certified rigging equipment that meets safety standards.
3. Coordination Between Farana/Cranes:
o The Fanran/cranes should be positioned in a way that provides optimal balance and prevents
any swinging of the load.
o The two farana/cranes should lift simultaneously and in a coordinated manner to avoid stress
on any part of the load or the equipment.
o Both farana/crane operators should communicate regularly via radio or hand signals.
4. Load Rigging:
o Ensure that the load is properly rigged for the tandem lift, using appropriate slings and lifting
attachments that can bear the weight.
o The centre of gravity of the load should be determined and accounted for in the rigging.
5. Test Lift:
o Perform a test lift to check that the load is stable and balanced.
o If there are any issues with stability, adjust the lifting slings or crane positions as necessary.
6. Execution of the Lift:
o Both faran/cranes should begin lifting slowly and steadily at the same time.
o Maintain constant communication between the operators and the signal person throughout the
lift.
o Ensure that the load is lifted evenly to prevent it from tilting or shifting.
7. Monitoring:
o Monitor the load’s stability during the lift and throughout the move.
o If anything, unusual happens (such as excessive sway or load shifting), stop the lift
immediately and reassess the situation.
8. Lowering and Set down:
o Once the load is in the desired position, lower it slowly and evenly.
o Ensure both farana/cranes lower their portions of the load in a coordinated manner.
o Once the load is securely set down, remove the lifting slings and check for any equipment
wear.
9. Post-Lift Inspection:
o After the lift is completed, inspect the equipment used (farana/cranes, slings, etc.) for any
signs of wear or damage.
o Ensure the area is cleared of any hazards before resuming other activities.

Safety Considerations:

 Communication: Constant and clear communication between farana/crane operators and the signal
person is essential for a safe tandem lift.
 Training: Only qualified operators and riggers should be involved in tandem lifting operations.
 Weather: Adverse weather conditions (such as high winds or heavy rain) can affect the safety of a
tandem lift and should be considered before proceeding.
