Activity 1

Exponential Notation Activity

Objective: Learn and practice writing numbers using exponents (exponential notation), and
understand how exponents represent repeated multiplication.

1. What is Exponential Notation?

Exponential Notation is a simple method of expressing long or repeated multiplication

problems. It is composed of a base and an exponent. In mathematics, we deal from very small to
very large quantities, to work conventionally with such extreme numbers, exponential notation is
used.

2. Explore Exponent Rules:

Fill in the blanks with your understanding of exponents. Complete the following statements:

 3232 means 3 multiplied by itself how many times?

2 times

 4343 means 4 multiplied by itself how many times?

3 times

 5151 means 5 multiplied by itself how many times?

1 time

3. Match the Numbers to Exponential Notation

Write the numbers below using exponents.

a) 64 = 26
b) 81 = 3 4
c) 1000 = 103
4. Apply Exponents in Real Life:

Can you find real-world examples where exponents are used? Exponents often come in handy for
things like measuring large quantities, population growth, or science.

One of the most common uses of exponents is in astronomy and chemistry where values
are very large or very small. For instance, comparing the mass of Earth and electron, exponents
make these numbers more manageable and easier to compare. Another example is in calculating
population growth, exponents are used to estimate how population increases. Lastly, in physics
and Engineering, exponents are used to calculate motion, energy, and waves. This is crucial for
engineers who design vehicles.
