FOR/AGAINST ESSAY WRITING GUIDE

Argumentative texts give advantages and disadvantages related to any controversial topic. It is a
formal piece of writing in which a topic is considered from opposing different points of view.

It should consist of the following items:

1. INTRODUCTION You state the topic without giving any personal view.

You can make reference to any current situation or scene (Some scientists
believe that in the future everyone will be genetically programmed.)
Address the reader directly (The question that remains is if we are all aware
of any characteristics that we may have inherited from our parents.)

2. MAIN BODY (1) You give points for (ADVANTAGES) along with your own
justification. (2-3 ideas)

3. MAIN BODY (2) You give points against (DISADVANTAGES) along with your
own justification (2-3 ideas)

4. CLOSING PARAGRAPH You expressed either a balanced opinion


(PREFERABLY) or a personal opinion. O

OTHER POINTS
Make a list of the points you will comment on, dividing them into:
ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES

Write well-developed ideas with clear examples, coherent linkers and justifications.

Use formal style (appropriate punctuation, good spelling and no grammar mistakes)

Include linkers (from your level!)


LINKING WORDS AND PHRASES:
- To introduce points: one major advantage/disadvantage of, a further advantage,
one point of view in favour of/against, regarding, concerning
- To list points: in the first place, first of all, to start with, firstly, secondly, thirdly,
finally, last but not least
- To add more points to the same topic: what is more, furthermore, also, in addition
to this/that, besides, apart from this/that, not to mention the fact that
- To make contrasting points: on the other hand, however, in spite of, while,
nevertheless, despite, even though, although, it can be argued that
- To introduce examples: for example, for instance, like, especially, such as, in
particular
- To conclude: to sum up, all in all, all things considered, in conclusion, on the whole,
taking everything into account, as was previously stated
