VOCABULARY
READING COMPREHENSION
1 Do you like your hometown? Are you happy there? Most Americans like their hometowns. In fact, 80
percent of Americans say that they like their hometowns very much. They are happy there. A large number of
Americans—almost 40 percent—live in the same place all their lives. They never move to a different place.
However, some other Americans are ready for a change.
2 Forty-six percent of all Americans say they want to live in a different location. They like their hometowns,
but they want to move to a new place. For example, some people live in a city, but they want to live in a small
town. Some city dwellers want to move to a rural area, or countryside. They don’t like cities. Other people
want to live in the suburbs. Suburbs are places near cities. However, many people who live in small towns
and rural areas are not happy either. They prefer to live in a different kind of place.
3 Of course, not everyone agrees on the best place to live. Different people choose to live in different places.
For instance, young people prefer to live in cities. They choose big cities like New York, Boston, and Los
Angeles. Martin Beck agrees with this. He lives in Boston. “I love to live in the city,” says Martin. “There are
great museums, restaurants, and movie theaters. There are a lot of jobs here, too.”
