PREFACE
REFRESH 1 to 8 is a series of eight books. The series is guided by the National Policy on ICT in School Education in India.
It is designed to introduce students to the world of information and communication technologies (ICT) and making safe,
productive, ethical and legal use of these technologies. The series attempts to address how to work effectively with the
computer and related technologies so that students are able to use ICT outside the classroom.

After completing this course, the students will be able to:

• develop digital literacy skills.
• access various tools and applications for learning and skill development.
• operate a variety of hardware and software independently and troubleshoot common problems.
• use the ICT facility with care ensuring their own safety as well as that of others.
• create a variety of digital products using appropriate tools and applications.
• save, store and manage digital resources.
• practise safe, legal and ethical means of using ICT.

Special highlights of the series

Get Ready: Recap of concepts learnt earlier
Activity: Activities in-between text for continuous evaluation
Hands-on Activity: Activities to be performed in the lab with guided steps
Talk About: Interesting concepts to initiate discussion in the class
Bridge the Gap: Activities that encourage cross-curricular integration
Pause and Ponder: Activities that encourage lateral thinking
Take a Break!: Engaging and picture-based fun activities
Project Work: Projects and lab activities
Lasting Life Skills: Life skill questions based on the concepts learnt
Vital Values: Value-based questions on the concepts learnt

Refresh 1–8 is filled with lots of lab activities for practice. It also has Fun to Learn for interesting snippets, Keyboard
shortcuts for useful keyboard shortcuts and Zippy Tip for additional tips and tricks.

Chapters based on Data and memory, Step-by-step thinking, Scratch, Computational thinking, HTML5 and Python
have been included. New-age technologies such as Artificial intelligence, Big data, Cloud computing, Internet of things,
Augmented reality and Virtual reality have been discussed. The section on Microsoft 365 aims to update students on using
an online cloud-based Office platform.

We have also made an effort to include free and open-source software (FOSS) in the series. Tux Typing, Tux Paint, Tux Math
and Rapid Typing Tutor are discussed in primary grades while GIMP is discussed in a middle-school grade. App development
using a free resource teaches to create simple apps. The series also includes a FOSS-based supplement on Ubuntu and
LibreOffice for Grades 3 to 8.

Sincere efforts have been made in conceptualizing and developing the content. We hope that it will be immensely useful
for learning and applying the knowledge in various fields. We would like to thank various computer science teachers and
resource people for their valuable contribution in shaping the series. Special care has been taken to make the books error-
free. However, errors or suggestions, if any, for improvement, will be highly appreciated.

you think is smarter, a human being or a computer? Discuss in your class.

For Teachers You may plan a role-play to portray the differences between computers and humans
to make the students understand the differences between the two. Encourage them to think of more
differences and share their ideas in the class.

CHAPTER 2
How Does a Computer
Work?

GET READY
Number the pictures in the correct order in each.

All machines follow an Input-Process-Output (IPO) cycle.

Let us learn more about it.

For Teachers You may encourage students to find out other examples of IPO cycle that they come
across in their daily life. Let them point out the input, process and output in each.
18

Computer Science_Book 2.indd 18 10-11-2020 02:53:51 PM

Let's Begin
Input-Process-Output cycle (IPO cycle)
We do a lot of work using machines. Do you know how to toast bread?
Let us write the steps to make a toast.
Step 1: Take a bread slice. Put the slice in a toaster.
Step 2: The toaster heats the bread slice and makes it a crispy toast.
Step 3: The hot crispy toast pops out of the toaster.

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

Here, the bread slice is the input as it is being put into the machine. Toasting
the bread slice into a crispy toast is the process.
The hot and crispy toast that you get from the toaster is the output.
Therefore, to make a toast, you follow the IPO cycle.
Can you write the IPO cycle for the following?

1.    2.   3.

………………………………………………….......... ………………………………………………….......... …………………………………………………..........

………………………………………………….......... ………………………………………………….......... …………………………………………………..........

………………………………………………….......... ………………………………………………….......... …………………………………………………..........

Like all other machines, the computer also follows the IPO cycle.

For Parents You may show your child some machines that you use in your everyday life and explain
the IPO cycle in them.
